    Chain running in

    Hi,
Just got my new DID chain fitted yesterday. I bought an endless chain, so the job seemed to be difficult with loosening/removing the swing arm, but with a bit of patience the chain came out, and got in very easy.

Is there a specific way to run in a new chain? I did about 100km now with it, and all seems fine.

    Ta,
    T.

I don't think there are special "rituals" to run in chains, only that you may need to adjust it once, relatively soon in the beginning (depending on the quality). Or, if you were unfortunate like me to have bought the OE chain, you may need to adjust it a couple of times in the first few thousand miles

Yeah, I know. The chain I bought was an endless one, so no dodgy links or rivets or whatever. It is also a confidence thing I guess.

Mind you, I only had to remove the swing arm pivot pin, so only one bolt, and I could manouvre the chain in and out. It only took about 15 extra minutes...

This kinda answers a question I've been holding onto for a while. So which is 'better' an endless chain, or a split chain?

The AT is not powerful enough for this to be a real question. Some guys drive around with a split pin, some have the new chain rivetted and some (with an extra 15 minutes to spare) use an endless chain...

As I said before, being an endless chain (which in my case was cheaper also) gives me the most confidence.

Spot on answer again from Tijn, I like the idea of using an endless chain too, especially when you see the price of a decent riveter

My experience with chains, I've run with a joint link and rivetted, I've never tried an endless, too lazy probably, none of them broke or gave me bother. I did find cheaper ones were like elastic bands and only lasted 10,000 miles or so, sorry to say I wasn't impressed with DID. 425 O ring lasted around 15,000. Genuine Honda one twice that.

The following chain thread from last Sept. may answer your question.
Read my experience after my chain broke doing 80 kph.
