    High mileage?

I'm looking for an AT as my first bike, and I'm looking for something a few years old. I know that these bikes have a good reputation for reliability, but what would you consider to be "high" mileage?

With a car I'd reckon on under 50k being lowish and likely trouble free, and over 100k likely to be on borrowed time. For bikes the equivalents seem to be under 10k and over 30k. I know it's a wild generalisation and there will be many exceptions, but it gives some idea of what sort of experience to be prepared for.

So what about an AT? I'm unlikely to get sub 10k miles for my money, but should I start getting wary at 20k? 30k?

    Thanks

    Hi Nemo

Mines a 92 RD04 with +40K miles, starts on the button every time, engine sounds spot-on, goes like a train (& weighs about the same!!!). Maybe mines the exception but I doubt it as I'm not that lucky. Go for it - you won't regret it. I've had all sorts of big bikes - ZZR1100, XJR1300 etc etc & I rate my A.T. higher than any of 'em.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!

127,800 miles up here and counting. Reckon they run in finally at about 50,000 miles. It aint the engine you have to worry about if you stick to the oil changes. The engine will outlast the wheels.........
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Mines just got to 30K and it feels as fresh as when it was new...... despite the appearance that looks as if its about 80 years old.

Shouldn't it bark like a dog or roar like a lion?

Mine has done 50.000km.... or 150.000, still not sure yet..

Starts whenever I need it. And what Yen said, the engine will outlast the rest of the bike...

Mine is about to roll over onto 33 000 miles and I have no doubt it will do at least three times that without hassles. My previous GS I sold on 56 000 miles and believe me it was only run in at 50k as I could feel the difference.

The nice thing about this great mileage misconception is that we can pick up bargains on sub 30k bikes because owners think the mileage is to high and let them go for peanuts.

If you take your time and look around, you may find a low mileage bike. I bought mine 6 months ago, a 1998 on an R plate with 6500m on it. The guy I bought it off only rode it at weekends, and also had all previous MOTs to support the mileage. More importantly, the condition and feel of it backed up the low mileage.
