    Another AT running badly . . .

I think my AT might be allergic to green lanes!

Generally it seems to run OK, if a little rough at low revs. However, on three occasions in the last week I've taken the Beast off the smooth stuff and up a bumpy lane. Each time it's conked out after about half a mile.

It restarts OK and idles, but dies when I open the throttle unless I really razz it (which doesn't do much for neighbour relations!). After a bit of coughing and spluttering it picks up and seems to be OK for another short stretch, then it repeats.

Back on the road it is better, but stalls very easily. After a blast down the dual carriageway everything appears to be OK again.

My guess is that it's either caused by the bumping along, or by trundling along at 2500 revs in second (although I can't replicate it on the road).

It's not the choke cable, because I took it off. Could possibly be the same as MacP's problem http://www.xrv.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5157 so I'll keep an eye on that thread, but any ideas would be appreciated. I really don't want to head up to the HU meet next week with a half-working bike.

It might be crap in the float bowls? The bumping about stirs up some particles lying on the bottom? If it's definitely not the chokes I think I'd strip the carbs. A lot of @T's sit lengthy periods over winter etc, this leads to waxing of the old petrol which can lie on the bowl bottoms.

Just another theory though I'm afraid.

That seems like a possibility, especially with the way that it clears after a bit of heavy throttle.

Something else that might not be helping is the carb balancing I had done a couple of months ago. Given the state that I found the chokes in, I supect that when it was last tuned one of the chokes was stuck partly on (could explain why the carbs were way out).

Off to the bike doctor on Monday for a thorough going-over.

I hope it is the carbs as that should be relatively simple to cure. If it's an intermittent electrical problem then I'm probably fskd. I'll be really pissed off if I don't make it to the HU meet next weekend.

Not sure of the age of your bike mate, older RD04's bound to be suffering rust in the tanks by now? Early 07's possibly as well? you don't mention if you changed the in line filter?

I would check the petrol tank for debris, renew the in line petrol filter and then check out the carbs, at least that would rule out the petrol side. Then you're on to electrical side, my personal nightmare as it can be grim trying to find intermittant electrical issues as they don't always do it.

From what you've described though I'd take a best guess at contamination at the jets. Could be from either rust deposits from the metal tank, wax deposits from the float bowls or water contaminated petrol. Best of luck mate.

Wanted to get it sorted in time for the HU meet this weekend so took it doen to the local bike shop on Monday. They said they were busy, but would have a look at it.

Spoke to them at 10.30 this morning and they hadn't touched it. Spoke to them again just now and they've had a look and tell me it's running seriously over rich, they don't know why, and it will be a week before they can fix it.

If I'd known they weren't going to have a proper crack at it I could have taken it somewhere else at the beginning of the week. Now I'm bikeless for the weekend. Bugger!

Would have bought a Ducati if I'd wanted this sort of grief . . .

If it's running rich sounds like your choke, choke cable or a blocked air filter.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

I've removed the choke cable, so we can eliminate that. The air filter is new. Both choke plungers are clean and have good springs.

That's my technical know how at the limit!

How about the floats in the carb playing up/sticking and dumping too much fuel in (does it leak overnight if the fuel tap is left on) or someone has been playing with the carb settings. Did they say it was running rich all through the rev range or just at low revs (pilot screw set incorrectly) or high revs (main jet been changed by a dodgy tune up artist).
