New to site, guidance needed, I think I want an Africa Twin

Ok, I presume this is where I can find out about Africa Twins… and possibly defecting from cruising on my Valkyrie. In the past I’ve given the Triumph Tiger a fair crack and don’t want to go there again. Seems like AT’s are good all round so what do I look out for, which are the better years etc. More importantly are there any local owner groups/meets in or near Peak District/Derbyshire?
    Thanks in anticipation
    Mick

    Thanks for the link

Thanks for the link and it looks a fine machine. Just in the exploration stage at the moment..I think. Where abouts are you. I note one of your previous postings mentions rides over Peaks!

Sorry, bit misleading that. I only asked if any members here made trips across the Peaks. I myself live in Exeter, a bit of a journey from you. But if you're seriously in the market for a good @, then you won't get much better than mine (so says the seller, but it's true!). And if you're desperate for a good @, then all you need to do is one of two things:

    1. Hire a Trannie and transport it home in the back.

    2. Come and get it in a car with a friend or relative and ride it back (what I did).

Hi Mick and welcome to the site.

All years of the AT have their fans - the older RD04s are said to have better build quality, the later RD07a's more economical, etc. They all share a reputation for reliability. Known problems include corroding wheel rims (gold ones are worst apparently), failing fuel pumps (look for alternatives and fixes on the site), rear wheel bearings seized caliper pins. Basically they are reliable, understressed and very entertaining motorcycles, robust enough for off-road and big enough for on-road touring, etc.

You're quite welcome to come and have a ride on my AT but I'm still a little way from you in East Yorkshire.
    Jim

    Hi Mick
A bit closer to home, I have one of the older 650cc versions (RD03) and I live in Biddulph (near Congleton), I was born and dragged up in Macclesfield, so getting out meant Cheshire lanes or Derbyshire hills.
I don't go a bundle on ride outs, but I'm more than happy to meet up somewhere and chew the fat/ let you look over the old dear (the bike that is).
PM me your details and I'll contact you.

p.s. I can't talk for Taz's bike, but hiring a transit and driving down to Poole in Dorset was how I got mine
