    chain lube

just gone across to a ptfe based dry lube that loads of people swear by. anyone on here use it? got fed up with black sh*t flicking onto frame/wheel/swingarm.

you have to de-grease the chain first(without degreaser getting onto any plastic or rubber, which was a nightmare) and its supposed to put a waterproof seal over chain and lube really well and claims to prolong age of chain(thats what they all say ). but ive never used a lube before that doesn't have oil or grease in it at all.

    Any idea?

I can't comment on the dry lube, but common or garden chainsaw oil seems to work for me. It's sticky enough it stays on the chain, but still viscose enough to delivered to where it should be by the Scotoiler - and you can pick it up anywhere.

I have been using this stuff for the last year or so for road riding without problem... found it doesnt collect dirt as much as oil or spit black stuff all over the bike.. however I dont go off road so I cant say about its effectiveness with large amounts of mud etc.

I currently use Motul on all my bikes, but the best I've ever used or liked was Blue Putoline.

Personal taste really, and how much you mind cleaning the damm thing!!

How to clean or "repair" a chain ??

Hi, I just bought one month ago an Africa Twin (RD04 from 1990 !!! 40.000 kms) but my chain has "hard points" like if there was no grease at all on some parts, but there is plenty of !! How can I do it smooth again ? I already cleaned it with some gasoline but still hard .What next ? Thanks for help.

Hi & welcome mate. Hope the sun is shinning in Phuket!

My guess is you may need a new chain if it's siezing (got 'hard points).

You could try totally de-greasing the chain and cleaning it incase it's got grit etc.. stuck in the links.

Other than that I can not be of much help, sorry. Someone else may have a better idea ...........?

Profi Dry Lube for me ! Think I bought it in Gericke. Got a French Motorbike mag and their test rated the best three as Elf Moto Chain Paste which looks like the old tube of polyfilla. France Equipment White Chain Lube and Gericke PTFE ( Profi-DryLube). Worst was Afam Powerlube. Everything else was pretty much about the same level. Gericke stuff scored 9/10 , Afam score 4/10 everything else was 5/10 - Castrol,Silkolene etc....

I have been please with the Profi-Dry lube as it does not seem to attract the dirt like the greasy lubes and I ride up some really mucky B-roads every day. Which makes washing the bike at this time of year particularly pointless as it stays clean for the weekend if I am lucky.

I use the original lube oil that came with my Scottoiler, which seems fine, at least I can see the d@mned thing clearly now! (As opposed to having previously used some spray on black, treacle cr@p, from Shell and a fuzzy black loop as a chain).

Once the Scottie stuff runs out, I'm planning to go to the anti-fling, chainsaw oil, which is readily available over here. It's the right viscosity and is not affected too much by the higher temperatures we have.

I'm sure I read somewhere, isn't it more "manly" to have a dirty rear rim anyway?
