    Exhaust removal

Ok quick question for all those that have changed the exhaust on their AT's, having got a nice Remus from Stewybear and undoing the two bolts on the exhaust hangers, then hacksawing through the clamp bolt that was rusted solid...

How the 'kin hell did you manage to seperate the exhaust from the collector,
I've prised up the end so it now seems to be free of the gasket underneath but no amount of twisting, wiggling, tapping with a hammer, drinking two cups of coffe and smoking three ciggies seems to make any difference.

I would prefer not to take an angle grinder to it as the original exhaust is in good nick.

Answers on the back of a postcard to this forum please.

Assuming that you have removed the above bolt try soaking it in PlusGas for an hour and heating the outer tube with a blow torch, the collector box on an RD03 is not stainless so it does rust, don't know about the later models?

p.s. if you haven't taken the bolt out I suggest saying nothing and pretending it was rusted up

p.p.s. Tip of the day, don't grab hold of the pipe you've just heated up with you bare hands, to us seasoned engineers this is called "learning from experience"

From my recollection it is very tight.... it does take a while and requires patience. I helped mine off with a lump hammer and wiggling the end can hopeful it will start to come slowly and then when you've got some movement it should be ok.

Yep, even took off the footrest hanger for that extra wiggle factor

Went with Dilbert's idea, and a small hammer, Dave was right, it is a tight fit, even more so with the amount of rust that was there - inside the pipe !!! .

Still got it off now, cleaned up the end of the collector applied a small smear of exhaust paste and the Remus slid on a treat.

Cheers for the help guys, all I've got to do now is work out the misfire on the front cylinder. Checked the choke cables and plungers thanks to the info on this site and they seem to be moving freely, put new plugs in - those Iridium jobbies. Not helped the misfire but boy does it start a lot easier with them in. As its been standing for a while due to writing off a car with it I suspect the carbs may need stripping and cleaning or I've got an air leak around the inlet stub, oh well tank off time again...
