HELP You need a strong right hand grip for this !!!

Hi all, Im hrs away from getting my twin back on the road after a long summer of powder coating and rebuild only to find the grip twist on the throttle very tight. Ive stripped it down, cables clear and free moving to the throttle on the carbs, the twist barrel is free moving in its body onthe handlebars but when I put the cables in it it all goes tight. Its like the cable sheaves are too long and theres too much tension on the throttle cables. The tensioning nuts on the outer cable sheaves are all in tight. Any help would be much appreciated.

Couple of thougts on this one :

    1) are they new cables and are they the right length - compared to old ones, plus are they correctly routed

    2) do you have different handguards fitted i fitted some wrap around handguards, and when i tigtened up the bolt that goes into the bar on the throttle side, it was too close to the twistgrip, and caused enough friction to make the throttle VERY stiff - just slackened it off and moved the bolt out about 1mm away from throttle grip. Is your bar end catching/rubbing on the throttle grip

Or if this bolt is too tight it can expand the handlebar tube?

    throttle grips

Hi guys thanks for the thoughts. The cables are the old ones used before the rebuild. I have the rubber grip off the twist grip and the engine kill swtich is clear of the twist grip body on the handle bars and no bar ends fitted. Anton88 you mentioned correct routeing. without the sniggers from the back row what is the correct way to route the cables ?

sorry dude, i dont know for sure the routing of the cables. My rdo4 was stripped and re-built at some time, and i'm not sure that the cables were put back properly

Hopefully one of our other tech heads will be able to clarify

Do you have the white nylon guide inside the throttle cable housing at the end of the grip? Try throwing it away and not using anything, you may have to adjust a bit more slack out of the cable.

Had a very similar problem myself. When I got my bike I oiled all the control cables and when I reassembled the throttle the twist grip was way too tight. Simple solution was to simply slacken the 2 clamp bolts on the throttle housing. I've set mine so they're tight enough to hold the unit in place without twisting the whole thing when you operate the throttle, but just slack enough so it doesn't give the problem you describe.

For what its worth I'm intending to junk the standard throttle set up in favour of a Venhill single cable unit and make myself a new cable.....the closing/return cable serves no purpose!!

    hope this helps!!

    twist grip

Hi guys, Ive now got a right forearm like arnie I can however happily report back its still not fixed but can say that if I only fit the main cable without the push return cable it works fine. Am I asking for trouble by not fitting the return cable.

i see you didn't mention that you came round to my house and had a look at mine and made mine as bad as yours!

I will say that after a few more minutes of tinkering and dirty looks from me you ended up leaving it even better than it was! So thanks. If you need to look at it again give me a shout. Got the scotoiler sorted once you left and then washed her.

I had this. It was a cable routing problem and mine was incorrect when I bought it! It's very very fiddly but once done, you can tighten up the clamps and the throttle still remains free!
