    Cracked Front Disk

    Has any body experienced hair line cracks in their disks?

    During a tyre change this weekend i noticed a tiny fracture running from the outer edge of the outer hole to the edge of the disk. As the hole is very close to the edge of the disk, the crack is only 10mm long, and there is no cracking towards the hub. I can't feel an edge so it's not noticable when the pads pass over it but i dread to think what would happen if it opened up.

    The disks have plenty of life left in them although the bikes done 31k, so i don't want to change if they are still servicable?

    Also i noticed the disks are marked left & right (noted after they were removed!) I trust they are fitted this way when viewed from the riding position and not from the front of the bike.

    Any advice gratefully received and let me know if you have a spare owners hand book!

    Cheers

    Yes I noticed exactly the same on my RD03 which has just a single disc up front, I quickly ran out and ordered a new one which has been gathering dust in the garage for about 5-6 weeks now, I know i should change it, but since I'm planning a major overhaul of the bike this winter I just can't be RSed.

    Yes I've had a rear disk go that way, changed it straight away, you really do not want a disk exploding under braking.
    I've seen car disks go, and when they go, they go---BANG and chunks of disk fly, then the fun bit, brake pads close up and whats left of the disk can't get past them, instant lock up.
    No fun when your front wheel stops rotating when your are doing anything more than a walking pace.
    So IMHO if the bu**ers got a crack in it, change it now.
    Brakes = Important
    Brakes = Replaceable
    You not Replaceable.

    Well said Hagalaz

    A mate of mine had the same problem and the wheel virtually jammed up, but happened as he approached a round-a-bout at snail pace so he didn't come off luckily. A very rare thing indeed but not worth the risk in my opinion.

    Yep, your right guys. Time to get on the blower to David Silver!

    Might as well overhaul the calipers at the same time.

    Ok, Responsible Engineer head back on, bike is sitting in the garage waiting for me to replace the disc, in the cold light of day I didn't fancy it locking up as I sweep in front of a line of three abreast trucks on Thelwall Viaduct, if I didn't get squashed/ heavily impacted by the trucks it's a long way down off the Viaduct
