    Glad the engine is tough

As I checked my oil the other day, and there was nothing showing on the dipstick. Well, the tiniest little line of oil could be seen on the 'Min' line.

I have absoutely no idea what happened - it was given an oil change when I came back from my JoGLE trip/before Salisbury and was fine. I can't think how long it was like that for.

Lesson - don't rely on the oil light! Normally useage is minimal...

Haven't checked it since! But then, it hasn't been ridden since so I guess I can be excused! Just glad the thought crossed my mind before I took it out on Sunday...

I will keep an eye on it. The oil filter might want tweaking down (Tech term) a bit more.

You hit the nail right on the head there, defo never rely on the little red light, most of these measure oil pressure rather than level, usually amounts to much the same thing, but not always, had a Ford Escort estate that just started to show the red light and well after replacing the engine the mechanic told me that they have a hollow crankcase which holds 1 litre of oil and the light comes on when there's 1 litre left, so if the crank is full the rest of the engine is....err.... well knackered

If you don't check the oil level then that make two dipsticks on the bike

My take on it was that the oil light coming on pretty much means you're taking damage Right Bloody Now. This is usually a bit further along than the min mark on the dipstick. Still, nice catch.

As said above most red lights come one when there is a drop in oil pressure which also means there is not enough oil left - too late you pay

Especially tricky on the dommie, which doesn't even have an oil light...

Mine likes to take a Big Gulp every now and then. I've had to add a whole liter one time, which is an awful lot since it only carries 2.

Given how much oil it can make disappear in a short motorway blast you'd think it's Guinness in there. (Looks the same, too! <gd&r>)
