    CDI units for 650 rd03

just a note to talk about the twin cdi units for the 650 xrv. my bike had an intermittent misfire, which then developed into only one cylinder firing. i thought maybe fuel pump, or stuck choke. but by swapping the cdi units (under the seat) with each under, it showed that only one was working, because first the front cylinder ran, then swapping the cdi, only the rear cylinder ran. this shows which one was duff. as recommended in other links, you can have a go at repair by resoldering the 6 joints of the socket by removing a bit of the black plastic casing on the opposite side of the socket (i used a junior hack saw and knife). it actually worked. i have just taped over the damaged casing with insulation tape. my soldering is crap. takes about 20 mins in total. when i took the casing apart, the joints looked fine, so i was surprised that it worked. i also went to a breaker to see if any spares - a single unit new from honda is about £150 + VAT. the marking on the case was MS8 CI558, which corresponds with honda part number 30410-MS8-610. this is the same part number for the cdi units of the transalp XL600 VK f, 1989-1995. having looked at a transalp site, apparently you can mix MS8 and MM9 cdi's on the transalp with no ill effect. i would think the same goes for the xrv 650. MS9 cdi's are about a 1/3rd cheaper - part numbers 30410-MM9-008 (case marking MM9 CI529), which is for the XL600 VH, 1987, and 30410-MM9-830 (case marking MM9 CI55, which is for the XL600 VJ, 1988. worth knowing if you really have to bit the bullet and buy a new one.

    Now he tells me

I got mine fron David Silver for £100 a piece and they confirmed that they are used on several different Honda's (direct from Honda's manufacturer so no Honda mark-up).

Advice from several sources (incl Cabbage above) is to either mount them lower down, sideways or fit a pice of wood/ steel across the top of the frame to prevent the seat resting on the connections.

rather than mess around trying a different mount (to stop the cdi's rubbing against the seat base), just chop a bit out of the bottom of the seat with an angle grinder - it's plastic so easy mod
