Speedo Drive needed for 91 Africa Twin

    Hi
Apologies if answers to my questions can be found on the site- i am on an adventure ride in New Zealand, have little access to decent speed PCs....

I arrived from the UK into NZ to buy my first ever AT. What a bike! I have ridden the desert roads below Lake Taupo and am planning to do the south island soon.

However, my speedo has gone. Drive was seized, inspection released it and showed that the plasctic drive cog is broken.

    Details: 1991 XRV750

    Questions:
    1. Does anyone have a spare cog please? (doesn't seem to be available singly from Honda)
    2. Does anyone have a spare complete drive unit? (presuming no one will sell me just the cog)
    3. Perhaps most critically, can anyone tell me for sure which other models of Honda use the same drive and/or cog found in the AT? This is most likely where I will find the solution in NZ

Dismantlers here have no ATs in stock. No knowledge on cross over parts.

    Any advice welcome.
    Please email or text 0064 21 022 99436

weblog is www.wideboyracer.co.uk in case you are interested (if you know any adventure riders here in NZ, let me know).

    thanks guys

PS despatch of any parts can be to home address in UK

there is another africa twin forum that shows you how to use your tripmaster as a speedo. YOu have to solder a 10000 Ohm resistor to the circuit board where it says SPD and the tripmaster adds a option for speed, hence reducing the need for a speedo. I will find the link

    heres the article

    Improved Tripmaster

There are lots of @ riders who have mounted an additional digital speedometer on their bike, either just for fun or because they don't trust their analog speedometer.

There are several offers on the aftermarket, but I will tell you one which is definitely cheaper than any other one and looks even better. The solution is quite simple:

    Use your tripmaster !

Although nowhere described the @'s tripmaster contains the option to show the cruising speed permanently on its display! Unfortunately this feature is disabled by default (law/technical limitations ?), but you can do the necessary work to enable it very easily on your own.

This is what you have to do:

    # First of all remove all power connectors from the tripmaster, remove it from the bike and do the work at a calm and dry place.
    # Now open the tripmaster with six screws on the backside. Then open it carefully to avoid destruction of the seal.
    # You can see the backside of the mainboard. Loosen the main board to reach its frontside. This is done by removing five further screws.
    # Now you should see the board as shown on the picture:

    # On the left side of the big IC in the middle you'll find two open contacts, labeled with SPD (stands for SPeeD). Now you simply have to connect these both points with an resistor of about 10.000 Ohms. Solder it flat on the board to secure enough free space after closing the box.
(using a zero resistance works also, but with the 10k resistor you are sure not to overload any circuits)
    # That's it. From now on you should be able to switch with the mode button between Trip1, Trip2, -Trip and Speed ! Additionally you can choose between mileage and kilometer distance display by inserting/removing an additional resistor at the point marked with MILE in the same way.

However, there is a small problem with this modification: If you press the "reset" switch while in speed mode, the tripmaster hangs. It needs a complete reset then, which can be done by pressing the clock adjustment (time and adjust at the same time) and everything returns to the normal condition. Additionally, the SPEED display doesn't switch to miles if you insert the resistor, which would have been an excellent option for bikes assembled with an km/h analog speedometer and imported to a mph country ... Perhaps this "techical lack" is the reason why the SPEED display is disabled by default.

Of course you do any modifications decribed above on your own risk !

Just been thinking i have a 1991 the other option is to buy one of those cycle computers and fix this on as a temp measure. I did this on a race fireblade that i put back on the road to go to trhe Bol Dor it worked really well

And I think there was some doubt about the speed conversion working on all Tripmasters. I'm sure I remember reading that on here when this was last discussed.

As to a replacement I can seriously recommend the Touratech IMO range. They really are the DB's, and have a reassuringly expensive price tag to match.
Failing that the Trailtech range are very good if a little small.

Oh and as the speedo drive then this is a fairly regular problem discussed on here. I think you have to buy the whole jobbie, and the type of grease used in the drive seems to matter as well.
If you speak to David Silver spares I'm sure they'll ship one Internationally to you.

Make it a "Sigma" cycle computer (these will work at high speed, which most brands don't). They cost around about 20-40 UKP, depending on how many fancy functions you want. You will also need a "rear wheel conversion kit" (designed for putting the sensor on the rear wheel of a bicycle), as it has a wire long enough to reach from your 'bars to the wheel. Or you could lengthen the original wires, if you're really cheap!

I have one of these on my Triumph - really just because it was cheaper than buying a waterproof clock! It works very well. Though it does record the maximum speed you've reached, so remember to press the reset button if you get pulled over
flat out on utterly inappropriate tackle

...doesn't this also require the speedo drive on the front wheel to be working?
