Did you route the cable correctly (as per Mr Honda's original) and avoid any sharp bends??

    Is it lubed??

I'm guessing both the above could cause excessive friction which would put a strain on the cable.

    'tis strange indeed!

I did indeed no excessive bends ect. make a note here the part supplied oem is longer than the honda which can cause routeing problems.
    Or I am just unlucky.

    Speedo drive

I recently had problems with my Speedo drive and after replacing two plastic gears and finally the whole drive, it still only lasted about 2kkm before breaking. After a heated debate with the Honda dealers, they stripped the whole speedo system and it was found the inner-cable was about 3mm too long, which caused excessive friction inside the cable-housing and caused the plastic drive gear to bust every time. I don't know how this happens now, since I have never replaced the inner cable or the outer (after 100kkm), but there it is.

I've got a pattern cable I have to use sometimes when waiting for a new genuine one to arrive (Chad, don't forget my spare cable). It's HOOOOOGE. I'm not kidding, when you pull away you can see the clock hesitating before it moves. The inner bottom part must twist quite a way before the inner top joins in the fun.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!
