Make sure you hear it from cold!
The clutch rattle is norm you go's a bit when you pull in the clutch.
Any sort of distinctice ting knock or ratttle xrv's are agricultural by nature but excessive rattles or bangs can mean problems its hard to say exectly you have to go with your gut if in doubt walk away. Regardless of what people say the xrv will pull smoothly if it hestitates or surges there could be problems or bad serviceing.
I find it will make the most noise at higher rpm's so keep your vizor open and listen down infront of the tank alot of engine noise gets passed up there when rideing.
    Thats my tuppence worth.

    Buying an AT

12inch has covered it pretty well. They aren't the quietest of engines but should only really have a mechanical noise rather than a knocking. I don't know if it's the tappets but there is a bit of 'tapping' on running the engine.

Sounds a bit daft but, is it possible to listen to another before you go? Are there any for sale in shops nearby you could listen to?

    TA! Shel
