Carrying Tyre levers - A solution!!

After pondering where to stash tyre levers on the AT i found a simple solution

A pair of 15" tyre levers fit perfectly to the underside of the seat!

It's such an obvious place i am sure it's an old idea, however i didnt find anything on the forum.

For those interested, i cut a notch out of the ridge to allow the levers to fit flush to the under side of the seat. This is only minor surgery with a mini hack saw and does not effect the strength of the seat in any way. A neat cut exactly the width of the levers side by side helps to keep them in place. The levers are then slotted under the existing rubber strap.

A small cut is also required where the levers pass over the rim of the tool compartment to allow the seat to sit back down in it's original position.

The levers i use are mm perfect and the curved ends follow the contour of the seat so they almost like part of the original tool kit. If they were any longer they would stop the latch end of the seat clicking into place.

I have not hit the trail yet but i doubt they will move around. If they do i will find a short rubber strap for the other end of the levers and hook each end into the round holes in the seat base.

    Sorted

Nice job. Your post and pics just gave me an idea and more room in my panniers. I typically use three irons to get the job done though.

mine are cacble-tied to the frame under the side panel - you can get at them (and the spare tubes tied there too) without removing anything else.

Have you any experience of changing a tyre on the road side??

Waiting for the AA on weekend is a waste of space

Nope but I have had experience of waiting for the AA.
there's loads off threads about changing tubes and removing tyres etc. I'm hoping I will be with someone who has done it when it happens (even if only to use their side stand to break the bead) but I'll just have a bloody go at it if not.

The levers are a last resort. I carry a small tin of Holts tyre weld in the tool compartment which i would try first. If this failed then a spare front inner tube could also be also used in the rear tyre to get me home. (Never tried this but i believe it works).

I also have a third short tyre lever which fits vertical in the tool box to make the job easier as GSPD750 mentioned. I just need to get one of those small hand pumps.

I've only ever done roadside punchure repairs before with someone elses help. We had loads to do during a 6 month trips across Africa.

I don't fancy the though of doing it on my own in the dark on a cold wet wintery night!

    Well done Ralph.
Someone did post some pics a long time back with the levers in exactly that spot. Can't remember who though!

Wot type of foam? I'm considering buying some for real emergencies(if I can find here), so at least I can get to a road side vulcanizing shop, of which we have many over here. Has anyone tried "SLIME", the emergency tyre sealant? Any success?
