    help rear wheel removal

My rear axle seems to be stuck on! I have got the nut off on the RHS but cannot push the axle through. I've tried tapping it to loosen it - but it won't budge. I'm a bit worried about hitting it too hard.

I can turn the bolt head on the LHS ok with a socket. I have noticed that as the axle turns when I do this - there is something on the RHS turning with it. Its between the brake caliper mount and the wheel hub.

First time I've tried it on this bike.

Any thoughts appreciated. How hard can I hit it on the RHS.

    thanks

    Richard

Put the nut back on about 6 turns and then give it a good sharp whack (use a block of wood between the hammer and nut) that will shift it, when you put it back together put some copperslip in the spacers, they seem to stick lots.

    Not this time

I bought myself a rubber mallet, but after a lot of whacking it still won't budge. I was trying to chane the chain and sprockets.

Need new tyres as well so I'll put it back together and get the tyres done at a garage, where they can take care of it I'm sure.

When they have got it off once I'll fix the sprockets next weekend

As already suggested , nut back on the spindle a few turns , block of wood or lump of copper between the hammer and the nut then give it a good whack! I always use a 2lb hammer - much more effective than a rubber mallet.

I assume the wheel is off the ground while you`re attempting to remove the spindle ??

    stuck spindle

If possible, use a piece of brass against the bolt head and give it a smack.

It could be a 'touch' of rust on a bearing face as that also allows you to rotate the shaft but won't let it slide out. If you knock it on the bolt head side you can 'shock' it free easier than the nut side whereas the threads could be damaged easier.

Keeping a cover on the disc and caliper try a copious amount of WF40 or the like. It probably won't help but, at least it will make you feel as if you are trying. Leave it for a while, then 'tap' it'

Good luck and don't forget that most of us are watching this in the hope of learning something from yourself with having to do it ourself!

If you can turn it this is a good sign. Get someone to turn it as you belt the other end with gusto. Once the end of the axle is flush with the swingarm, use a socket set extension bar to carry on the good work (hit the end with the hammer whilst holding it on the end of the axle) if it won't pull free with your hand (support the weight of the wheel with some bricks under the tyre so it doesn't twist and hold onto the axle.)

    update

I had another go this morning, after liberal WD40ing yesterday. I got some early joy when I loosened it enough to be able to move the chain adjuster.

Lots more banging, my rubber mallet is starting to crack, but I managed to get the bolt head separated from the swing arm by about half a centimetre. After that, no more.

    Its now all back together.

I must have a new rear tyre next week, I hope the guys at the garage can budge it. The question is - do I warn them before hand, and give them an excuse to charge me extra labour? Or just hope they will do it and barely notice a problem?

Say nothing and tell them it came off easy last time and what's their problem, don't they know how to do this? what kind of amatuers are they?

p.s. rubber mallets are no good for this, best to use a big hammer (ideally a lump hammer) and protect the shaft end with a piece of wood, mallets just bounce of and don't transfer their energy, they're meant for hitting plate thet will yield easily.
