    Tick-over adjuster RD04

Just had John round with his RD04 - Black, only available abroad.
Took his choke off and cleaned it, put everything back together. The tick-over needed adjusting only it's not there. On mine the tick-over is easily visible and accessible through the left side fairing. John's has the clip that should hold it but no adjuster.
Feeling mine back to where it joins the engine, John appears just to have a philips head screw. Trouble is you'd need about a one inch long screwdriver to get to it.
Any thoughts? Reckon the previous own substituted this screw for the original unit? John is ticking over at close to 2000 revs.

Can you turn it with fingers only? If not, I've got an angled screwdriver I got from Halfords years ago. Got me into a few awkward places in it's time. If you want to meet me in the East End of London with a warm engine one day we can have a go with that.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

thanks for this guys. I will check the price of the missing part and have a go at the thing my self. If i can't do anything I may take you up on the offer of the angled screw driver - very good of you to offer

Until then - thanks to whealie for his expertise. The bike is running better but I am guessing the fuel consumption will remain high until I fix the tick over!! I am half way there!!

Or you could try making one, go for a nice cheap square sectioned one rather than round, clamp the pointy end in a vice to the length you want, heat the end with a blow torch and tw@ the handle end with a mallet or hammer, hey presto one angled screwdriver

Have you checked out the Tech Data to see what parts are missing? might just be a cheapo thumbscrew?, if the bits are expensive from Mr Honda, see if any scrappers are selling the carbs and ask for just the tick-over bits?

2,000 rpm I thought 1,200 was a fast tickover (my other bike's a diesel car 800 rpm tickover)

If you want to have something like the original idle adjuster, you could try making one.

I reckon a screw with a long thread of the correct pitch which fits the carb end, could be threaded and glued into a length of one of those spring'ey curtain/net wires. The other end of the length of curtain wire could have a knurled nut/handle screwed and glued onto it for the adjusting the idle.

Althernatively, replace the screw with an allen/hex socket head screw, and use a small allen key to adjust it.

    Just a couple of ideas!!

    Regards

    Bob

    Tickover adjuster

Thanks for the advice guys. After gettng back from wheelies I had a better look at the bike - taking the tank off and consuting the haynes manual. What I found was we were wrong about the philips screw head and that there was nothing there at all However on further inspection I discovered that there is an allen bolt adjuster that you come in from above, not below. With the tank off you can access it (making it a bit hard to set the tickover while running!). It appears what usually happens it the thumb screw adjuster pushes the allan screw from underneath (so you can adjust the tickover in 2 places).

I undid the allen bolt as far as I could and put the tank back on and now it runs at about 1300 which will have to do for now as that it no more room to adjust it. I ordered the new part from David Silver for a tenner so will try that when it arrives. I guess the point of the above is if you loose / damage your tickover asjuster you can still make and adjustment by removing the tank and using an allen key

Hope this helps others - sorry to be so long winded!

    John. :P

Well done John - it was very dark and we were out on the stgreet when we tried to find the tick-over. If you want to use my garage again, when you get the part, just pop round.
