    BRAKES.....

...... or indeed the almost lack of........

My front brake is rubbish. Stood still I get a 'bump' in the lever as it forces the piston in the master cylinder over a wear lip by the feel of it and the rear has about 1.5 - 2mm of 'rock' at the sliding pins, though abmittedly, its prolly the better brake of the 2 Moving things get better at the front, but it lacks any real 'bite'. The rear is fine moving, but the rock at the pins worries me so will need to be fettled.

So, I'm intending to fit braided hoses, overhaul/renew the front master cylinder and overhaul the calipers all-round.

Any recommendations - i.e. avoid braided hoses, where to get the pads/pins from and any pit-falls I need to be wary of before I start. I'm a handy enough mechanic (bloody well should be after nearly 20 years of it) but experience counts for more then book-smarts in my opinion and as its the first major job on the bike, I welcome your advice....

    Fire away.......

Can't imagine a good strip and clean has ever done brakes any harm. Neither has braded hoses as far as I'm aware. You should be able to get the pins and seals through your local Honda dealer or David Silver Spares. The pins are not expensive. Pads are pads and as long as the dealer has a book to look up the part number you should be fine. Good luck!

Just bought 2 front pins and a rear pin from Wemoto - fronts were under £2.50 each, rear under £6.50 - all genuine Honda items.

Pads - I picked up some EBC pads for £15 per set from Manchester bike show, again Wemoto do them for roughly the same price - or a some cheaper ones at £8.00 a set.

They also do stainless steel pistons and seal sets for under £15.

Seems like a lot of folk are sorting out their brakes at the moment has anyone come across a more robust caliper design that'd fit straight on?

    Cheers guys, all good stuff....

Dave, you never did answer the query in one of the above threads about how fitting the hoses affected your brakes - any better/worse.....

Just a quick up-date - I hadn't been out on Dessie for a couple of weeks - yes, shocking i know, but had the chance yesterday. Its been raining and the discs had a fair coating of rust as a result. I did a bit of light brake 'dragging' through the estate and by the time I got to Glasgow city - MY GOD - what a difference!

I can only put it down to glazing on the pads that the light rust marking scrubbed off, anyhoo, she brakes loverly now, just need to sort the slop out on the rear caliper....

I still aim to do a re-build on the front - its just not as urgent now!
