    Front brake light switch

    Hi

My front Brake light isn't working, I have checked the terminals to the switch and there is power getting there. I removed the switch and can't see any moving parts, how does it work?? I know SIlver has them in for £7.00 plus so probably not worth attempting a repair. I'm just puzzled as to how the switch is actuated.

    Cheers

    Hi,

have you tried wiggling the wires about on the switch connections. Mine was not working when I first bought it but after a bit of fiddling (ooer missus) it was fine and has been ever since.

    cheers, Bob.

    Hi Bob

I actually took the switch off this afternoon and made sure that the connections were okay, flashing the feed wires together caused the brake light to work so I am assuming that it must be the switch itself. I did remove the plastic block switch unit but couldn't see any moving parts.

There is a spigot on the switch unit that connects into the bottom of the hydraulic unit but I can't see how squeezing the brake lever causes the switch to operate. Maybe the interacting parts have disintegrated and thats why the switch doesn't work. I'll order a new part and take the old unit apart when it arrives.

I wouldn't be overly concerned but the MOT is due shortly.

    Cheers

    Re: Front brake light switch

I know that this post is months after the event. I have suffered the same problem...and am tight with it. If you carefully remove the offending switch, and touch the two wires; the brake light should work (Tests that the switch is at fault and not the wiring / lamp etc.)
The switch can then be sprayed FULL with an aerosol electrical contact cleaner through a very small hole near the microswitch lever. This spray evaporates in minutes, and cleans the surfaces of the the contacts. The switch in my experience is a sealed unit. The spray has to be worth a try...mine has been ok now for the last 14 months. My in for a penny approach has worked. I would not risk WD40...you really do need a 'contact cleaner' (Thats my theory anyway)
