Unhappy Front brake caliper pin removal

    Anybody got any good tips?

The pin that holds the pads in is well and truly stuck. The hex shape is rounded out, I've tried getting another sixe up allen key in there, but to no avail.

Also tried drilling a pilot hole and using a screw/bolt removal tool, but I just can't get the thing to grip - is there a trick to this?

ANy other ideas appreciated or I will be going tail between my legs to my nearest garage.

Only saving grace is I've probably got a couple of weeks left in the pads - but I hate to cut it too fine.

    thanks

You can try a torx bit hammered in and an impact driver, or remove the caliper and grip the inside part of the pin with molegrips, or use a hot rag around the alloy for a few minutes before trying to undo the pin.

How much for one of them dittoers Impact tool from machine mart is about £5 and works a treat. Had the same problem with mine last year and sprayed loads of wd40 or something on the pin before putting a hammer to it. Think the 2nd or 3rd strike it moved and then it will come out fairly easy. You can kiss the torq piece goodbye though

    thanks

I tried a t30 torx but it was too small - try to get another size up tomorrow.
It looks like it was over screwed in - be the mechanic who last changed the pads - the thin end is sticking right out on the inside, on the other one - which is nice and easy - its flush.

Not necessarily so Richard. My current pins are flush with the inner side of the caliper - the new ones I bought (Honda OEM parts) are a good 5mm longer!

Heat it with a heat gun. I mean really heat it. The smack it with a center punch very close to the outside it give you a biting point and then tap it out with the center punch. Keep heating it if it doesn't come out the first time. Hold it in a vise, clamped with wood.
