Do a police Bikesafe day and even join up with the IAM. They do not teach you to drive slowly, trust me. You'll learn about being in the right position and gear to do what you want faster and yet more safely (thy call it "making progress".
Going off-road is also a good learning experience. You realise that just because it feels like the bike is going down, you can right it again. But go with someone, because of the bike does go down, it's a bugger to pick up on your todd in the mud.
If you then go on a track day, you'll probably enjoy it more.
