    Back axle

    Hi all,

Please help a noob . I've just bought an 1998 AT, needless to say I am more than happy with her.

I tried to adjust the chain tension, but that back axle nut is stuck. Is there some kind of safety ? My old Kawasaki had one but I don't see any, on the AT.

So, my question is: Is there a trick or I just need to use more force (although I've used plenty already ) ?

    Thanks,
    Cip

    Hi Cip,

What year/model bike do you have? Things are done differently on the various models.

    Doh!

    Sorry about that

Well it should just come off then. Maybe it was over-torqued or has seized for some other reason. I'd tried a big arm on the end of a long spanner, then maybe a thump or 3 with a big hammer, then I'd take it to someone who knows.

    Re: Back axle

Use some Plus Gas or similar on the thread before jumping up and down on the spanner, use a socket and a solid torque arm rather than a rachet and give it a few good raps with a lump hammer to "shock" the thread, Loctite make a spray that's supposed to freeze shock the thread, don't know if anyone's tried it?

BUT before you do all that make sure the last owner didn't fit a tab washer or pin the nut

When you put it back lubricate the thread (and the unthreaded part) with a Graphite, Molybdenum or copper grease (or even just a smear of oil) and use an "aerotight" or "nyloc" nut.

Thanks all, that thing was really welded there. I've tried with a loong spanner but it wouldn't budge.

Finally, I took the bike at a tire shop and they've succeeded (with a bad ass truck tire spanner).

    Excellent news cip.

Makes sure it's all cleaned up, greased and torqued properly when it goes back on.

And fit a new aerotight nut, if it starts binding up when you screw it up run a die down the axle thread to clean off any "pick-up"
