    oil leak

My RD04 has a small oil leak. It has traditionally done this I think but I slightly overfilled the oil recently and it is now worse - it drips when I stop.
It is leaking from somewhere reasonably high up and dripping onto the chain near the front, so it splashes on tothe oil filter and centre stand etc.
    Any thoughts?

I wonder if this is how scotoiler was made....

you did ask for thoughts... not help....

I did have a leak from my timing chain adjuster on my CB once... ?? that was reasonably high up.. Just needed a new gasket.. to fix..

without looking, i'd guess rear rocker cover gasket is weeping somewhere.

p.s the i got 2 of the re-cycling boxes off a friend in Suffolk

    Re: oil leak

Overfilling can cause a pressure build up in any engine... check the breather tubes for signs of weeping oil....

and also.... when you see the leak start to appear.... pull over and pop the dipstick out and use it as a gauge to see the oil level.....

Next thing to check is for a marking similar to the one below usually located on the crank case....

At least you won't need to buy a scotoiler! Hope you get it sorted.

It will prob be from the crankcase breather. When I got my AT it had been overfilled and it blows it out through the breather - pipe ends near front sprocket. Drain a little out and get the oil level and see if it stops (I used a syringe and piece of clear tubing in the filler hole rather than use drain plug). My CRM250 did the same after a few too many wheelies but that dripped onto rear wheel . Just the oil sloshing around.

I think Anton is probably right Whealie, mine 'mists' the top of the rear head/barrel very slightly from the cover gasket, and I've heard of other AT's doing the same. It's a pretty easy job to change the gasket though (on an RD07 anyway!)

    Cheers all,
I will try to remove some oil (a syringe rather than from the sump and see if that helps). If not, a gasket it will be.

Sounds favourite, my old CB750 used to do this so I fed the tube into the sprocket cover and clipped it in place, nice warm oil mist onto the chain and it didn't seem to use a huge amount of oil either

If not then probably the rear rocker cover as above, to check for an oil leak, let it stand till it cools a bit and starts to drip, if you can't see the oil wipe a finger horizontally across the engine (avoid the still hot bits), keep doing this and going higher up the casings till you find the highest spot where there's oil, you just found your leak.
