I know this is possible onthe RD04 but I have never done it. Will it be in the Haynes Manual or is there something obvious?
I have the side panels and seat off so thought it might be a good time to do this long-standing task.

Two XRV750-M ('91) RD04s on J ('92) plates.
Laser Pro Duro, crash bars, bark busters, heated grips, GPS, topbox, Alu Boxes, Scotoiler, Starcom, ciggie lighters and XRV stickers.
Its a bit of a fiddly job - you really need a pre-load spanner to turn the collet to compress the spring if you want to raise the rear ride height a bit.
I found it best to remove the items youve said, plus the black mudguard under the front of the seat.
then disconnect/remove everything on/in the airbox so you can unbolt it and move it back out of the way a bit.
then youve got more access to get at the lockrings on top of the shock - either with the pre-load spanner or if you really must, a suitable drift and hammer.
