Afican Twin prices in Sweden. Help Please!!

Here in Sweden it seems as if the swedes are "very proud" of their used motorcycles. Prices on Africa Twins are stupidly high, in fact it seems to be cheaper to buy from a dealer than from a private seller. In my local area some arse is selling his '96 with 56000 Km / 35,000 miles for 3640gbP (sorry no pound sign on my keyboard). The best deal I can find is on bike is from a dealer. 2400 Gbp for a '96 56000km . Am I nuts for even considering this? What should I pay for a '96 with 35,000 miles?

Needless to say this sort of insanity has got me thinking, why not import a bike, maybe from Germany or from the UK and ride it back up here? Do I have to pay VAT or MOMS on a used bike in the UK, or in other EU countries?

It seems as if I dont have to pay any taxes here in Sweden if i import a bike from within the E.U. I just have to get it inspected.

That looks like the way to go... prices of ATs in UK are pretty robust, but not THAT robust

Don't they have their equivalent of Autotrader? They must do, mustn't they?

Have you tried any of the translation sites to help with your research? Babelfish is one? A few folk on here have given links to others...

Have a look at this - if you pm him he might tell you what he paid and that'd give you some idea of values over here at least?
    Advice on what's next

Re: Afican Twin prices in Sweden. Help Please!!

Thanks for all the help everyone! (Vader, I might just take you up on your offer.)

I think I'm going to wait until the end of summer save up a bit more and then buy a bike in Germany. Seems like you can get way more bang for your buck there. I can get a loaded '96 AT with three aluminum panniers, gps with 40000km for the same price I would pay for a bone stock '96 with 56000km here in Sweden! I'm a happy man!

I only have two issues now.

    1. I don't have an EU motorcycle License (I have a American one)
    2. Whats this hubub about not getting the plates? how do I solve that one? I can't ride the bugger all the way back to Sweden with no plates!

If I buy a bike from a German dealer are they going to give me **** about the non E.U. License?

How do I deal with the plate issue?

    Thanks Again!!
