    Rallye Fairing

A question for any of you guys with a rallye fairing on your RD04, I've been looking at the fairings from Africanqueen but at over 2K to get one over to NZ its not practical, they look to be built around the RD04 side fairings with a custom front, tho it looks to have a steeper angle on the front where it angles up but would you say the overall shape is based on the factory side panels?

If they are I could make a couple of glass copies of the sides and trim them up and then glass in the rallye style front, lights, dash etc.

Its a bit of work but the @ hasn't moved far since I broke my ankle and it'll be awhile before its working well enough for me to ride so I'm feeling the urge to modify

    Re: Rallye Fairing

I'm not sure of the design part, but I think the prices on farings are bloody nuts, they're simply not that hard to make. Once you make the mold then it's just the time and materials to make it.

My first job was at a company that made bug guards for cars. They would take a casting off the front of a car with fiberglass, then use that cast to build a clay model then modify the clay model to the shape of the faring and then re cast it in fiberglass. Good luck and let us know how it goes for you!

Probably worth having a search or at least a wonder around the pictures gallery as anyone that's done anything like this is likely to have uploaded pictures... if we're lucky they have, anyway!
RD07a, reg in 2001, Black, heated grips, short screen, Scottoiler, Givi top box and panniers, DataTag, full Riky Cross crash bars, Baglux tank cover, Facet pump, mostly 200 miles to reserve and presently a lot happier since being loved up at Chad's hospital for sick ATs!

    Re: Rallye Fairing

Been doing some tracing down of fairings. apparently you can get one from Boano Racing in Italy for about 300 euro. Not sure if this will help as shipping will be expensive. Heres a link to the thread, looks damn good, much better price that africanqueens.

A question for BREEZE please !

Boano make the fairings for AQ, the expensive part is the mounting bracket, if you can make that yourself your ahead of the game

    Re: Rallye Fairing

I've been checking the shots on africanqueen's site from the rally and all the fairings from them and boano as well as looking at a few modded ones on here just to try and get a better idea of what would be involved before I rush into anything.

I'll keep collecting my pics and strip the front off the @ and see what I need to fab up, I can do a fair bit of the fab myself but have a couple of mates who can do can machining up some pimp bits for a few beers

I was thining of taking a mold off my mates 950 front fairing and blending it in with the rd04 sides to make some kind of 950/@ mashup rallye fairing, decisions decisions.....

Have been tempted to get a 950 or even a 690 when they arrive but wheres the fun in that when you can mod your @

    Re: Rallye Fairing

looked a fair bit into this as we too had the idea of producing a new fairing for the project bikes, making up a new faring using the old as your pattern for location on the tank is easy (use polystyrene stuck on and then smooth over with Plasticine!) you can shape this to what you want and its no drama.... the issues start when you total up the costs to make the mould and then the actual fairings.

you can buy moulding gel and CSM dead cheap ( works our about £20 per sq/m for non lloyds) but if you want strength you then need to add extra layers and this piles on a LOT of weight!!!.. best option is use a mix of Kevlar mat and woven grp fabric but this isn't cheap... Kevlar is £30 sq/m and you need 3+ layers. total cost of a diy faring thats not to heavy could be around £200, which it just so happens thats what you pay for one out of the beano boys shop anyway!!!

The fairing beano makes for AQ's is a carbon mix and thats why it is silly money, you cant make a faring with carbon fibre yourself as the process requires a megga bucks machine.
