    is it definately fuel pump?

Like the recently posted problem posed by "Gaz", my AT also packed up the other day after 40 miles on the motorway. Also, like it had run out of petrol. I knew the pump was its achilles heel so checked that first, still pumping. still wouldnt start. when RAC man arrived, still wouldnt start. When he tested the HT lead it started on one pot, and then back to norm when ht put back on. He said he thought the coil might be "breaking down" but it might last the journey. 12 miles later same problem. I poked the HT leads and it started again and has run 200 miles problem free since. Anyone any ideas? could it be the coil? I doubt it was fuel pump as I found it working yet the bike still wouldnt start.

I agree that it's probably not the fuel pump. It could be the coils but it could also be something as simple as a lose battery terminal.

What Lootch said. I had something very similar. My AT suddenly conked out halfway through a roundabout. Coasted over to the side and after several tries it restarted but firing on only one pot. Checked the pump and then all leads. Yep, sure enough. One lead off the battery was hanging loose. Tightened that up and we were away.

Hmmm, not sure about this one. The AT has four coils, one for each plug, so is it possible that they are all "breaking down" at the same time? I don't think so.

If you sure the pump is OK, it sounds like a wiring problem to me, like a bad earth or bad/grubby connection, or maybe even the protection circuit (sidestand, clutch switches?)

Unfortunately, although you can cast your eye over the bike, the only waay to find this fault is probably when it occurs again!

    Good Luck
