    Front sprocket/output shaft/gearing change

OK to make a long post short...

I want to make the gearing lower on my bike for a better RPM while cruising when I'm away.

I would like to try adding two teeth to the front or maybe one there and 2 at the back, to make it the equivalent of a 40 at the back with a standard front. (Still with me?)

However I do remember reading that only a Honda front sprocket would do. H

    - Is even a Talon or Renthal front sprocket no good?
    - Do Honda do different sized OEM front sprockets?
    - Will one of these be ok for the AT?

    Any other comments/experiences welcome!

    Chronyx

I personally wouldn't fit anything other than a Honda front, but I actually think a lot of it is hubbhubb, and in theory there's no reason why you shouldn't fit any sprocket as long as it's good quality and meshes with the shaft splines OK. I'm convinced most of the stripped output shaft failures were due to an overtight chain.

Anyway, getting back to changing the gearing, even losing a couple of teeth off the rear makes a difference (about 500rpm if my memory serves me right) for cruising speeds. I don't know how much the driveability would be affected with what you're suggesting, but it would almost certainly improve crusing and economy.

I think everyone would be interested in your results, what with fuel prices being so high, so please keep us informed.

    Good Luck

    Re: Front sprocket/output shaft/gearing change

I'm in the process of changing my C & S. My local bike shop did me a Tsubaki X-ring chain, JT 16 tooth front sprocket and a 41 tooth rear for about £112. I worked out using a spreadsheet that the 16/41 configuration changes 5th as follows (from 16/45):

    Speeds are in MPH

    16/45 = 70 @ 5000rpm
    16/41 = 76.8 @ 5000rpm

or if you ride a bit like me

    16/45 = 84 @ 6000rpm
    16/41 = 92.2 @ 6000rpm

Also don't forget, theres some rule about an even number of teeth on the front and odd on the rear (or visa versa) otherwise you get accelerated wear or something.

I'm also just about to submit another post with pics regarding the condition of C & S plus gearbox output shaft as mine looks a bit worn after 30k miles!!!

That's worrying, what C&S brand have you used in the past?

Thanks for that load of info though, that's very helpful!

I have a 17t front from a honda shadow, fits fine, cost £15.00 and standard rear, and it much nicer at 80mph, I wouldn't change the rear.

You said you want to LOWER your gearing. By adding teeth to the front, you are raising the gearing.
One tooth on the front is equal to not quite four on the back.
More teeth on the front will give what I think you want. More speed at less rpm.

    Re: Front sprocket/output shaft/gearing change

this looks like the thread for me..

Wayne-what are your miles per 1000rpm with the set up you have please? can you add them to this table for our delectation?

    16/45 = 70 @ 5000rpm
    16/41 = 76.8 @ 5000rpm
    17/45= @ 5000rpm

Anyone else got any variations to add?

    Re: Front sprocket/output shaft/gearing change

Three of us put a 17 tooth non Honda (but I dont know where it came from) front sprocket. This dropped our RPM at speeds by about 250-300 rpm. Ideal for the run to the Stella. However, not so good there! normally run a 16 tooth on the front. And before you ask, I cant remember what is on the back, but I am sure its standard!
