    CM seat

    Hey folks..

Well I have now done a few bigs trips on the CM seat. and the official verdict is that it is rubbish! It was very comfortable right after getting redone, (if you search i was worried about not being able to feel the gel pad.. but...), shortly after the Spain trip it was already sagging, so i took it back and Melvin happily added some more foam and recovered it on the spot.. So i was happy.. but the comfort was never the same.. After a few day rides it was kinda back to OEM level of comfort.. but I though maybe i was being over critical..

The orkney Ils's trip even Mrs.X was saying that this seat is not doing a good job.. But I though that they were crazy long hours in the saddle day after day. two up with all the gear. maybe i should not be so critical.. .. well this weekend i did a solo trip to norfolk (4 hours-with gear) and 1 hour in to the trip on the m6 (so nothing technical) my ass hurt like hell.. and it just got worse. by the time i got to the place i was going it felt like i was sitting on bare metal.. when i got off i did the finger test (on the bike seat you sick bastards) and sure enough i could feel the base plate.. got back at 2030h last night and my ass still hurts! I have called Marvin to see what is what and he said that i am "wearing them out" and the he expects people to do less the 3000 mile in a year.. bloody hell i have done 6k in 3 months! so maybe i am "wearing them out" but fu&* me for £230.. it should last longer that..and this time he will charge me as a complete reshaping (£230.00) I

Mrs.X has pointed put that it gets much worse every time we get on a ferry and they strap the bike down over the seat, and that maybe it is this that is killing the foam.. but a touring bike that cant get strapped down is a waste of space..

First off I must apologize to anyone that has gone the CM seat route because of my initial liking and recommendation! I am sorry. and I hope you do not experience this as well.. I dont know who has bought one based on my post except Simon.. but Simon I am sorry I buggered up!

So right now I am at a loss as what to do.. the options i have though about.. 1 p&p seats = another £230
2 g a wells..= dont know how much they may charge.. (remember it is now a two teared thing)
3- have a go on my own with some foam from the local foam shop and a electric carving knife... (i did shape my own for the xtz.. but no where near this level of complication)
4 by a touratech one (dont like the look though)
5 trade with some one and go back to OEM.

    ANY OTHER IDEAS????

    Re: CM seat

I think maybe you're expecting too much of it, at the end of the day unless the seat is radically re-shaped I don't think you're going to to get what you're after, it may be worth getting some new foam, cos maybe that lump is knackered, but you may be better admitting defeat with a normal saddle and getting a couple of Airhawk pads, expensive, maybe, but Chad and DaveS both rave over them ??

    Re: CM seat

Well since Ive been on the dark side I've aquired a CM seat and it is the 'dogs danglies'.
But the BM seat base is bigger/ better to start with,

Q: what do you wear when riding?

A:I always have BK leathers ( padded seat/ hips)they are well worn in so this plus the seat are heaven.

To be fair I never had that much problem on my AT with the standard/ or cut down seat, it depends on sitting stance/ hours in the saddle and your own Threshold level of pain/ discomfort

As I've had route canal surgery without injections, bones set, stiches put into me all without pain relief ( 26 stitches in a large leg wound), I'm immune to CS gas ( does not even make me snifle) I guess my threshold is a bit on the high side.

The people at work and GP's/Dr's always say I'm not wired up right as the more pain I should be in the more a laugh.......

    Spooky or what?

    Anyway I recommend CM seats

    OK

    Magwa

look I even make a BM look small! Dooh!

    Re: CM seat

I've been looking closer at this and must admit I was thinking Touratech or Afric Queens - mainly because I'm doing quite a few 200+ motorway miles journeys at the mo. And too much ££ for me at present too

But what does occur to my little head is that this is a circulation problem, rather than a padding one?
Anyone tried one of those bead thingies that cab drivers like?
Seems like that kind of thing would help keep blood moving in our loverly sensitive glutes?
RD07a, reg in 2001, Black, heated grips, short screen, Scottoiler, Givi top box and panniers, DataTag, full Riky Cross crash bars, Baglux tank cover, Facet pump, mostly 200 miles to reserve and presently a lot happier since being loved up at Chad's hospital for sick ATs!

    Re: CM seat

Dilbert, I could go about 2 hours on the standard seat before but ache set in, and the covering never sagged. This one = 1 hour and I can literally pinch 2+ inches of covering off the middle of the seat (for the second time), this is not a good thing. F1etch can verify this as I showed him at the UH meet. Remember too that I only got this seat done a few months back (feb 07) the foam should not have degraded that badly yet!? Or am i being unrealistic... no at this rate i would have to buy a new seat every 1.5 months.. I dont think so! I am considering an air hawk.. but I have had two friends who have gotten theirs nicked, off there bikes..so i want something that is "built in" or at least hard to steel (the second did have it strapped under the seat but the f6978ker just cut the straps) I dont mind spending the dosh.. I just HATE wasting money. and this has been a waste.

MAGWA: I ride in HG Toureg (padded hips/ but) and bike shorts.

Like you I have a rather high pain tolerance.. (and i am not just saying this to sound tough), they though i had nerve damage at one point cus to ..oh forget it long boring story..

    anyway..

Question: how many miles have you done on yours and has it sagged at all?

answer: from getting it done (in late feburary 2007) to 1st re-recovering just under 3000 miles (4 weeks later), first 2000 were great! I was doing upto 8 hours in the saddle for ****s and giggles.. Melvine was shocked at the amount of sag that he could see at the 1st re-recovering

from 1st re-recovering to now I have done about 3500.. first 800 were okay then it started to go down hill.. the HU meet was about the 1000mile mark the orkeny trip was up to about 3000, the rest this weekend.. I can now push my finger all the way to the base plate with the seat not being used over night!!! the foam has completely collapsed

I am 6'2" and about 80Kg (so not a small boy) but i do have a bony ass.. (i know most did not want to know this..). I know no seat is a god send but this level of foam failure is not a good thing! not at this cost!

For 230£ it should have lasted more then this! Maybe i just

I thought about that too.. but a circulation problem would cause different symptoms.. and would go a way quickly..Circulation tends to feel more generalized, an uncomfortably hot, cold or numb sensation, I do get this but it is very secondary. . I have sore points at the ischium and the coccyx (bony structures, so not as effected by circulation issues).. besides this would not explain why the pillion seat has collapsed as well.

    Re: CM seat

I've got a TT on my @ one of the single seat type and although not radically different from the original, I've never had any comfort probs with on 500 - 600 mile days.
I've got a Corbin single seat on my VFR which I must say is amazingly comfortable, IIRC its called a smugler, they make a seat for the @ but it looks very similar to the TT item.
I alway wear cycling shorts which, however I do a fair bit of MTB ing so I s'pose anything would be comfortable compared to sitting on that for upto 6/7 hours at a time

Yeah, that IS different from me - but then I'm an inch taller and, um, ten kilos+ heavier - about 93 -
Absolutely with you on the seat thing - seems like a wrongun so thanks for the warning

    Re: CM seat

    Hi,
did Cardiff to Glen Co last Wednesday (500 miles) with my £12 IKEA sheep skin cushion cover wrapped round the original seat on the @, no problems. It looks ****e but it works for me, and for £12; throw it in the bin if it doesn't work for you.

    Re: CM seat

I found the standard seat would cause butt pain after a few hundred miles

Bought a Touratech seat at vast expense - Found it little better

(and p*ss poor quality! Ripped the front hook thingy straight out! Only held into fibreglass with Rivnuts)

Just had my original Honda seat redone by Tony Archer for £60 plus postage

    Softer foam, Reshaped, Completly Recovered

Result - Comfy Bum & Walllet
