    primary drive shaft worn

So,I posted a thread earlier about my drive shaft, slight leak and on investigation find the front sprocket wobbling on the output shaft........pulled off the chain and the front sprocket is in good nick but the shaft has wear marks on it....looks like to change it you have to split the cases.I am gutted as the sprocket would have been easier to replace. The lock plate doesnt seem to be doing much so I thought maybe I ll try a new front sprocket and then check the free play again.I don,t know how long its been like that or how long it will last. How hard is going to be to try and find a new shaft. The local honda dealer here is a complete idiot so I know they won,t be much help.Think I ll take it to one side and start stripping it down and take my time.....

How much play? The sprocket is designed to be a loose fit on the shaft. Are you using a genuine Honda sprocket or a after market one? There is a difference in fit from after market sprockets to Mr Hondas.

Muckybill is right. The sprocket will float arount a bit on the shaft. Maybe post some closeup pics of the shaft for us to see. So...the output shaft has no radial play as first thought?

As someone who has been through this I deeply sympathize with you.

Although a little movement (of the sprocket) is acceptable there should be no visible wear of the splines.

As an alternative to getting an OEM shaft I took the old one to a reputable engineering shop and had them make me a new one at a 1/3 of the cost. The metal must be treated properly for hardening and there can be NO margin for error in manufacture. So keep a keen eye on the progress.

My #1 tip is to undo the rotor bolt and clutch nut before dropping the engine. This will save you days of heartache and sweat.

If the rest of the engine is in good nick dont bother with splitting the cases, weld a sprocket on. I did this for 25,000km ( at about 150,000km ) then ground it off and welded another one on for another 25,000km by then the the rest of the engine needed a freshen up so I split the cases and did it properly

    Re: primary drive shaft worn

I posted a thread about this not long ago.

    Gearbox output shaft wear..??

Mines ok now despite a bit of wear. Dropping the motor out of the bike and splitting it apart is a pretty big operation and personally I'd only do this if it really needed doing. If your oil leak is less than the amount of oil my scottoiler chucks everywhere then I'm sure you'll be ok
