Possibly still CDI - if you're riding along and get to 6krpm and the rev counter drops to 3k with the rear wheel not locking up, then it must be that the ignition unit has halved in frequency even but the engine hasn't halved in speed. BUT - this could be something other than the CDI - the battery voltage dropping away could do this. Do the headlights work OK at all times?

I'd make sure the charging circuit is def OK, (by sticking a voltmeter over the battery and checking that the voltage doesn't go crazy) and then try and substitute the CDI for a known good one borrowed from a bike that's running fine.

have tried all above.have to say also bike goes right up to 100 mph and rides lovely.so am wondering if the rev counter got cooked when the rect/cdi blew.going to try my local garage to see if they have an electronic rev counter.prob tomorrow as have to go and meet a courier as my new allit panniers/top box that were sent to my old address in cornwall!

That's odd! I would be surprised if rev counter would short the cdi, but you're right, it is possible so well worth disconnecting the rev counter and taking it for a spin.

Let us know how this one goes...

So these aren't mechanical rev counters? I always assumed they were!

Re: no more than 6000 revs

what i'm thinking is that if my bike does 100mph ish very smoothly then maybe its fine and the tacho is misreading.....?? i cant find anyone to check the tacho.ithought there would be some electronic gizmo to do this.i dont mind leaving for europe with no tacho but a little concerned leaving with a potential gremlin in the wires.ps.thanks dj for your help.
