    engine rattle.

    Hello all.

I ve recently noticed a faint rattle at about 4000 rpm whilst i am riding along. I think the sound is comming from the engine/gearbox, but when i am stationary i have built the revs up to 4000rpm and the noise isnt there.. i am wondering if it the gearbox? - or the output shaft? -

does anyone have any suggestions or ideas please?

    thank you.

I had a similar problem. Turned out that it was the bash plate touching the exhaust.

I will have a further investigation this evening - i am hoping that it is that simple - it certainly sounds like that sort of noise though!!!

    Re: engine rattle.

well i took the bash plate off lastnight and rode into work - and unfortunatly the rattle is still there..it seems strange that the noise dosent occur when i am stationary at 4000 rpm.

    any futher suggestions please?

    Re: engine rattle.

    Hi just a suggestions

My first bike a CB 500 had a rattle. It was because of some loose screws on a side panel. Tightened and all ok.
My VFR had some rattles also. Found the rear frame to be too loose.
    Tightened and all ok.
Check all screws around the frame

Both sounds only came when riding.

    Re: engine rattle.

Check for chain tension and/or tight spots on your chain.
Do you have engine bars fitted ? if so, check the mounting bolts.
These annoying rattles don't necessarily come from the location from where you think. Vibration travels all over the bike and may originate from a source well away from where you are looking.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: engine rattle.

thanks for the reply lowflier / @lf

I have checked pretty much everything and i have a nasty feeling that it is something in the top end that is causing the problem....but it is very strang and frustrating that i cant put my finger on the prob.

But - i am not burning ANY oil, no lack of power and no smoke at all.. anyway - im getting an engine guy to have a look at it in the morning...fingers crossed.

    Re: engine rattle.

My advice to then is to buy yourself a nice pair of earplugs and enjoy the ride
My 93 model AT makes all kinds of noises and rattles

    Re: engine rattle.

ATs do seem to rattle a lot, but just keep going. I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. One thing I would check is the plug tightness (both plugs in both cylinders unless you can tell which one it's coming from), and the HT caps, which can come loose and arc onto the inside of the plug well, although that sounds more like a top end knock than a rattle.
