    Question AT fast idle

Hello all I am new to this forum this is my first thread I live on Salisbury plain, so it makes sence (to me anyway) maybe not the long haired colonel, to have a suitable bike for the tarrain, I have just got an old AT it's done 50000mls so needs a bit of tlc Q when engine is hot the idle is rather high is it mixture or could carbs be over the hill. I just wondered if old AT's suffered from this & maybe I should look at new carbs instead of messing about trying to tune them. Any advise great to hear, love the site so far specialy the thread showing the utube ride in NZ,

    Welcome MOZE,

Check out previous threads on the choke cables and plungers, they are prone to sticking. there is lots of info on this topic.

    Cool Re: AT fast idle

Thats great thanks chad I shall try & balance carbs & retune, is there any other way you know to balance them without vacuum gaiges, don't really want to spend £50 for once in a blue moon tune. did you like the poetry blue moon tune, sounds like bareing your bottom on a frosty night & ripping one off.

Errr, never had a balance gauge near my 4 carbs on the GPz900, but they are reasonable balanced...though yes as they wear down I should give them a decent balance.

Anyway as long as the carbs butterflies cover the idle jet the same distance, both open at the same time and at the same rate then they should be balanced...I do this purely by eye but as I said on older carbs there may be other wear factors effecting the balancing so a vacumn gauge is the only true method.

    Re: AT fast idle

    Check the choke assembly FIRST

You need to check the choke lever, the top (single) cable, which goes into a splitter where two cables emerge (this is the most likely place it's fouling) then check the two cables where the go into the choke plungers in the carbs. Make sure they're not fouled or the springs missing/rusty/broken.

BE VERY CAREFUL of the plastic screws holding the choke cable/plungers into the carb. They break VERY easily, and it'll be £40 from Mr Honda if you do break one!!

I agree, if the choke is sticking people turn the tickover up to keep it running. Sort that before looking at carb balance or tickover speeds. If it has been done and the choke frees itself you'll find you have a super high tickover.

ps I still have my choke completely removed and blanked off and it's still starting in the mornings okay, ticking over nicely and using a little less fuel.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!
