    What kind of security?

Just wondering what lengths you all go to, to protect your bikes. What size and types of chain and locks do you use. Very interested to hear what has been broken into before, what tools were used (cutters and grinders etc...). Some of you may know how I rant about thieves so maybe checking out what they may try may help us all be a little better at protecting our pride and joys.

I used to work at a Lifting specialists, making and testing chains off cranes, ships etc.. day in day out. I found that it is nearly impossible to cut through 13mm Grade 80 chain (near strongest 13mm) with bolt cutters. It can be done, just takes a while of bouncing away like a madman on huge boltcutters. Bear in mind I'm over 100 kgs and did this for a living so maybe better at it than the average tea leaf. Anyway thats the chain I use now in conjunction with a lock that you cant get boltcutter jaws onto the main shaft of. I put a sleeve over the chain to protect the wheels, Works great but is very heavy. Hopefully a good deterrent but wont stop a grinder or more extravagant scumbags.

Let us know what you do. Cheers.

Almax Series 3 Immobiliser Chain with the Squire SS65Cs lock.

In a test done by Ride Magazine the chain did not score very highly when they attacked it with a sledge hammer and liquid nitrogen but that's not really a standard item in your average joyrider scumbag's toolkit. Been using it for about 18 months now with no attempts to steal the bike - that was following three attempts with a previous alarm/Motrax chain combination.

Don't wash the bike....ever. If they want it they had better say goodbye to the clothes they are wearing, cos they'll never be properly clean again......
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

    Re: What kind of security?

I know I don't have an Africa Twin but this seemed an interesting thread so I thought i'd post in it anyway. Security wise, I have a 1/8 mile long muddy, muddy track that leads to my back garden (There is no other way of getting the bike out). Then a big gate leading into the garden, and in the garden is a big, re-enforced concrete outbuilding (shed). In there securing the bike is a ground anchor, an Almax Series 4 Chain and Squire lock, and an Oxford Monster through the front disc. There is also a CCTV camera in there that feeds straight to a HDD in the house, so even if a thief smashes it, I still got footage of his mug. I'm also currently working on an alarm for the sehd too. Hopefully that is enough.

When I was 17 I had a scooter which had a snake lock built into it and someone had cut halfway throught that once, but that was when the bike was kept onb my driveway.

    Re: What kind of security?

OK, here's my tip for 2008 with regard to security, which I have used in the past.

Buy a Wireless Doorbell (now available with 100-300 metre range)

Set up the receiver doorbell in your house/flat.

Open up the casing of the trainsmitter/bell push, and solder onto the button contact a cable leading to a suitable contact switch on your garage door/handle.

That way, any £ukker that even attempts to open your garage, can be greeted by a angrily work up AT owner with a baseball bat, as they root around your garage.

These wireless doorbells can be had for about £10 nowdays, and you could have yourself up and running with a wireless alarm for less than £15 and a couple of hours fiddling.

    Good Luck

    Bob

P.S. Make sure your transmitter is on a separate frequency (usually adjustable) to your own and neighbours doorbells if they have them. Actually, if you really want to frighten the beeejezus out of potential theives, make sure it is on the same frequency as the whole neighbourhood!!!!

    ALSO...

I suppose you could fit some king of tremble/motion/vibration switch to the doorbell transmitter, and fit one directly to the bike if you leave yours outside all the time like I do now!

Let us know how you get on, or if you decide to go into full time production of my idea please (I'm on 20% OK!!)
