Rear wheel bearings, and cush drive, and sprocket carrier bearing ????

Blimey posting a raft of techie questions now. How to make a short story long. My @ failed MOT due to above listed problems, friendly local bike shop offered to do work, including ordering spares. Phoned a week later to be told spares not ordered, due to going into receivership. So going to have a shot at it myself. Would it make sense to renew all bearings and cush drive, thats rear wheel and sprocket carrier ?

A techie question from a not very techie guy.

Renew all three bearings at the same time, and the cush drive.

You can get can get everything from Wemoto (highly recommended) for the job here http://shop.wemoto.com/index.dyn?oid=25391 (that link is for an RD04)

Getting the bearings out can be a bit fiddly, but obviously they're knackered so you don't have to worry about damaging them. Get yourself a stout bar, thick long screwdriver, or old socket extension that fits through the axle hole. Slide it in at an angle, and drift/tap out the bearing on the opposing side of the wheel GRADUALLY, all the way around its circumference. Once out, it's easier to do the second one. The sprocket carrier should be a doddle, and the cush drive is just a push in (by hand) affair.

All in all, I reckon 1-2 hours with enough time for a cuppa!

Make sure you DONT forget to put the spacer back in between the wheel bearings, and use plenty of grease on everything.

MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL, MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE CHAIN. YOU WANT IT ADJUSTED LOOSE. Search the forum on chain, and you'll get a wealth of knowledge.

Good Luck, and don't forget we're all here if you get stuck!

    Oh, and I almost forgot.

Don't discard the old bearings straight away. Use them on top of the NEW bearings, so when you are tapping (gently, all the way around) the new ones into place, the hammer actually strikes the old bearing, using it as a drift.

Only thing I'll add is to warm up the hub (with your wifes hairdryer ) before you tap the bearings out.

Put the new ones in the freezer for a short while before you start, it helps them to slide in easier

Fantastic help guys, very much appreciated. Some great tips in there as well. Job dont feel half as daunting now. In fact quite looking forward to it. Will fire in another post when work completed. In fact, with getting mucked about quite a lot with local dealers, will feel better knowing repairs have been carried out with all the right bits etc.

    Yours cheerfully,

    Big Peter.

I had a real worry recently. I had this 'tick, tick, tick' sound, which was speed related, not engine speed related. Output shaft bearing I thought. Bugger, as I have a sloppy chain and 21,000 miles. Or was it seized chain link. Checked chain, seemed all OK, checked discs and pads.....all OK...

Left it alone to sleep on it, next morning, found stone stuck on tyre with old chewing gum....

Re: Rear wheel bearings, and cush drive, and sprocket carrier bearing ????

47000km and my rear sprocket carrier bearing have disintegrated. The first sign was that the rear sprocket seemed to be loose. It wobbled. I removed the rear wheel and 7 ball bearings fell out, and the rest? Well the rear wheel must have eaten them. See pitting marks on the inner bearings. Everything ordered and I am going to replace the front wheel bearings too, just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the tips of the removal, will also try this over the weekend.

Rear bearings get eaten quicker than front, least the old ones came out OK, I remember a rally where we had my rear wheel over a gas stove for a while and then a really big hammer etc to replace really rotten bearings with worn ones from someone else in the pits/campsite!!

    Will be cool.
