    Choke now sorted

Managed to get away from work early today, so seeing as the weather was good, got the bike out to finish off replacing the choke plungers. Striped it down again, replaced the plungers and springs and then screwed in the covers i took from the front brake calipers.
Whilst I had the tank off, decided to replace the plugs as well as these were black with carbon.
Put it all back together, runs sweet as, and has lost the smell of petrol as well whilst riding. Just need to see how better the fuel consumption is now as I was getting 180 miles to a tank before.

When I was putting my plungers and springs in i was terrified the things were gonna fly out and get lost whilst I tried to do the blanking screw up.

I know I sound sad but I got 55mpg yesterday.

hopefully will manage to get over 200 miles to a tank. I dropped one of the blanking screws which fell into the sump guard. It was more difficult getting the threads right and not cross threaded. So far was worth the time and effort, even it was only to get rid of the smell of petrol

Out of interest, when you say 180 miles to a tank, do you mean a tank full, or to reserve?

Yen, you have to say that with a brummie accent (normally said in reference to a diesel Ford Sierra estate) to get it right.

JB1 - you won't regret blanking the sod off. I don't know about economy, but it really is amazing how steady and clean the tick over is with non-malfunctioning chokes. makes me wonder if the damned things ever work...

I had brummie in laws so I know how to correctly say the following words/phrases,

Cowin (used as a mild swear word in every second sentence).
Pop (apparently means a fizzy drink of any description)
    Hammer (for putting screws in)
    Screwdriver (for opening paint tins)
    Tara fer a bit (goodbye)
    Arrr (yes)
    Kipper Tie (cup of tea)
    Spar (local shop)

Errr have I missed summat here?

Are we saying you can put the caps of the front brake pad pins over the original plungers and springs to get rid of the choke cables and still have the carbs sealed up?

If so, thats a smashing idea and next time mine goes wonky I'll do just that!

    Re: Choke now sorted

    just done it with mine.
got new blanking screws from Lings,
found suitable spring and cut, so level with end of thread , so less risk of blank pinging off into bash plate or somewhere.
One original spring was rusted away in 4 pieces ,
have kept remaining spring as pattern in case i need to replace chokes.
Does'nt start from cold very well
Tried to adjust mixture, but end of mixture screw crumbled when i put screwdriver on it
So thats carbs off to fix

Anyhow, once started and warm, ticks over nicely, and rides well.
Dont know on mpg yet, was getting 40 to 45 mpg before , so hopefully will improve.
    Will keep you informed.

You have to start it just right when at low temps, most AT riders haven't used the choke for years so are already very practiced at starting on a cold day with no choke.
