    Re: RD04 Rattle

    The plot thickens !!

Just been into my local Honda dealer.

Chief mech there came out and had a listen.

He doensnt thinks it cam chain or tensioner

he doesnt think its valve clearances, although he thinks they may need adjusting

he said, tappets would be noisy all the time

He said cam chain would be audible at tickover

He thinks it may be resonance or something somewhere vibrating as it is strange that the noise comes on at a given revs

Suppose in one way thats good news given what he quoted me for doing cam chains !!!!!!

    Im getting frustrated now !!!!

    Thanks

does it wen bike is at standstill so dont think its speedo related.

noticed one interesting thing last night.

Doesnt seem to do it as much when the bike is on side stand compared to mainstand

Could this be an oil or oil flow issue ???

blocked oil filter maybe not letting enough oil through ???

    oil pump ?

clutching at straws I know but there you go !!

that fed up with it, I thought stuff it and went for a long ride on it last night !!!

    Re: RD04 Rattle

sounds (no pun intended) like it could be piston slap. That sounds like a metalic 'flutering' under low load, goes under load. I guess it would be unusual at only 30k miles though.

    Re: RD04 Rattle

Having read everything I can on these things recently, I had thought about that too but discounted it due to mileage - you never know though !!

Having never heard piston slap I dont know !!

Also, having read a bit about it would this not tend to go away at least a little when the engine is hot due to expansion. ??

My noise is there hot or cold

    Re: RD04 Rattle

MMmmmm, being on the sidestand affects it?

    1) Is it different if the clutch is in or out? Clutch basket wear maybe?

    2) Could it be a foreign object in the crankcase?

    3) Any chance theres a foreign object in the airbox?

    Re: RD04 Rattle

    Morning Bob

Same with clutch in or out

    Airbox clear

Suppose could be foreign object in crank case

Thought id cured it last night - rear cylinder manifold bolts were loose ish. tightened them and the noise seemed to go.

stood the bike up took it round the block and noise returned. thats how I noticed that the noise doesnt seem as bad when its on the sidestand

Thanks for your input Bob - its much appreciated

Yeah, I mentioned the copper O rings between the cylinder heads and header pipes before.

They are in there aren't they? and also, the exhaust port and copper rings are a different diameter on the front & rear cylinders. Get the wrong ones, or get them the wrong way round, and you'll definitely get gas escaping at that joint. Just another idea.

    Morning by the way!

    Re: RD04 Rattle

if touching the exhaust has had an effect, what about the join between header pipe and silencer? Dunno about the TA, cos i've not been in there yet, but there's usually a bit of something like asbestos packing etc. has that disappeared? (there are a few joins in the TA exhaust system).
Have you tried using a screwdriver as a stethascope to try and pin down where the noise is coming from?

    Re: RD04 Rattle

Yes, tried the old screwdriver thing - didnt help much

Seems im going to have another night in the garage tightening, untightening and generally scratching my head !!!!

Instead of just tightening, might start taking things off now - at least its something different to do

Not only is it annoying me but the wife is getting annoyed as well now - all those littel jobs that need doing are taking second place to this bloody rattle !!!!

She should be grateful - at least im not in the pub !!!
