    RD04 Rattle

Got a rattle on my RD04

It done about 30k miles (well thats what the speedo says !!)

    at standstill -

    No rattle at tickover

Just a hind of a rattle when engine is reved (at the rev peak)

    on the move -

    No rattle under acceleration

Semms to rattle when just off load - say when tryting to hold a constant speed.

    Metallic rattle

Thinking this is cam chain / adjuster / tensioner ??

Anyone agree or have any other ideas ??

    thanks

    Chris

Hi Chris, I would check the sump guard is mounted properly, the clutch on these bikes rattle when cold it normally goes away when the engine warms up though

    Chris,

is it definatly comming form the engine do you think? - loose chain knocking on the swingarm - or bearings?

    Re: RD04 Rattle

As far as i can tell its coming from the engine.

It a very rapid metallic ticking.

by carefull adjustment of the throttle I can ride without it doing it.

the higher the revs the faster the tick (i think)

    perfectly quiet at tickover

Just looking for ideas so I dont end up spending a fortune doing jobs which I think may cure it but dont !!!

Loose screws on the exhaust heat guard? The one on the silencer does this if the little locating tangs get bent.

    Re: RD04 Rattle

Well took the bike to my mechanic last night.

"thats a strange noise" he said

He said it could be cam chain related but he doesnt think so at this stage.

He has suggested initially setting up the tappets, balancing carbs etc

Hes going to do that lot next week so will see how it goes.

As an aside he said he did an engine swap on an @ last year whre he replaced the 750 with a lump from a firestorm. Now theres an idea !!!!

By the way - if it does turn out to be something more serious (or more expensive !!!!) then there willl probably be an RD04 for breaking so all you RD04 lot, on your marks ..............................

First dibs on your nose fairing sub-cowls if they're in good condition

Seriously though, hope it doesn't come to that. I think tappets can make that sort of noise and they're quite easy to sort out so it might be something simple like that with a bit of luck.
