Think it depends on how and how often you use the bike and the climate where you live really. Over here in warmer climes, about 1-2 years is max life, most batteries are "tropicalized" as per the advertising guff, whtever that means. Still, as a regular consumable, we pay about 11-12 quid for a top up type and 30 quid for a maintenance free for the @. Think you've done pretty well then if your battery is 6-7 years old!![]()

Here's how I came to decide on which battery to put in my @![]()

Batteries are a real hassle to sell - what with the acid, weight for posting, etc.............
I've ordered quite a few batteries for various bikes from Tanya - excellent service and competitively priced as well.

I'd say that's quite a good life span - on previous bikes I've normally managed 2-3 years. Perhaps the sealed type are better....
But get this, I also have a 2001 (Y-reg) AT, and my battery is still going strong, despite virtually no use over the last two years, and going from 8,000 miles (when I bought it in 2004) to 86,000 miles at the beginning of the long 'little use' period. I left it six months without starting one time, and there was still enough oomph to start it without any noticeable slowing, and with a carb full of varnish (I forgot to turn the petrol off...). Maybe bikes built at this time were just fitted with very good batteries.
Either way, when this one finally DOES bite the dust, I'll invest the £70 or so in another Yuasa - I'm very impressed!

Mate, where do you live? I bought a new battery for my Africa trip (Just in case) so I still have my original Yuasa one if you need one. There's nothing wrong with it and it has been charged up and holds nicely. pm me
My battery lasted about 6 years on my number two AT. I thought it had gone once but it turned out to be a broken connection at the fuse. I think every day use keeps them alive longer, everytime I hear people saying they have battery problems the word 'optimate' seems to be mentioned in the same post. I start my bike with the lights on (unless its very very cold and I think it might be a bit of trouble starting, no choke you see) and ride with them on all the time.
My DR350 battery has lasted at least 5 years as well (it was on the bike when I bought it). However it went flat after not riding the bike at all for a year. I reckon it will have given up the ghost and need replacing now I've let it flatten completely at that age.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.
1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!
Mine lasted about 10 years. I bought this bike in year 2000 and that same battery was just been replased last week. Now I have cheap Taiwanese battery in it. Dont expect it to last too long. Maybe this year. Regulator problems tend to weaken batteries on AT.
Thanks for the info lads....looks like i've not done too badly...the current one lasted a wet trip around Wales on Saturday but only lasts a week without a charge....I guess i'm going for an equivalent of the existing battery, if it lasts another 8 years I'll be happy..
