    Worrying fuel problem

Isn't it always the way. I leave for a 14 day trip from Santander to Roscoff in less than a week and the @ is misbehaving.

She is going onto reserve at 150 miles - but there is still 7 litres in the tank??? I have drained the tank and checked the fuel filter (which was the biggest I've ever seen!) and its fine.

    Any suggestions?

Could my pump be packing up?

Which Africa Twin is it, the one with the 2 fuel lights or the one with just a reserve position on the fuel tap (RD04 or RD07). Could be a sticky choke, used to drop my switch to reserve from about 220 miles to 170 miles.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

The last 2 times I have re-fueled. Usually I go onto reserve at about 200 miles and it takes about 20 litres from there to fill the tank.

The last 2 re-fuels she has gone onto reserve at about 150miles. I assumed that I had not filled the tank fully previously but could only fit 15 litres in. Which is why I suspected the filter.

I don't have a reserve light (2000 RD07?) she just starts to miss and dies as I'm going down hill and I flick the tap to reserve then she's fine. I disconnected the choke last year because I was sick of replacing it. It's reasonably warm in Cornwall even in winter and apart from a few weeks when I did not use her everyday she started happily without.

thats a strange one for sure if the fuel filter was blocked it would cause other problems it might be worth dropping the fuel tap out and checking the gauze tube that filters the fuel before the tap isnt clogged up with somthing

    worth a try

Simply disconnecting the choke won't be enough. The choke plungers are pulled OUT by engaging the choke so maybe leaving them in is the problem.

it might be worth dropping the fuel tap out
Yep, tried that - that was when I realised that I had 22 litres of petrol in my tank and had gone onto reserve 5 litres early. Gauze looked clean all the way down.

Everything was cleaned and checked before putting it back together. I don't think shes running rich, plugs & exhaust are clean and she doesn't smell.

I'm pretty sure that she's not using more fuel it's just that the reserve is coming on early. Which would suggest a blockage. It must be the tap or filter gauze. I'm off to the shed to drain the tank again.

What about the electrics if all filters are clean and your mpg is still good as per your averidge ride overall, perhaps the reserve pick-up/sender is askew and needs tweaking.

You worry too much. Milage will vary...depending on how we ride any given day...right?
