Washing bike, chain lube and scottoiler

    Hey All,

This is probably a dumb question but...

I'm gonna wash my bike because it really needs a good clean and I've read that when you wash you're bike thoroughly you need to lube the chain again after.

My bike has a scottoiler fitted so is there a particular scottoiler lube that I need to use of can I just use a regular wax/lube? In either case can someone recommend a lube to use?

    Cheers,
    Slanty

Scottoil is around £6 a bottle and 1 bottle has lasted me about 5000 miles. I am sure that you can use an alternative oil but it has to be thinner than normal chain lube or it will not flow through the system properly.

A bottle of gear oil (EP 80/90) has a handy spout and the oil is perfect for the job I even use it in the oiler. It's not sticky like scottoil but it works fine.

Re: Washing bike, chain lube and scottoiler

I think what you're actually asking is do you need to lube it manually after washing and if so, what with...

So - if you're careful not to wash the lube off the chain then you don't specifically need to lube it afterwards to stop it rusting.

But, if you've given your rear sprocket carrier and swingarm a good scrub with de-greaser then you could probably do with rinsing that off the chain and lightly re-oiling it. There's no compatibility problem with any other chain lube and scottoil, but if you use something gunky and sticky you'll then be scrubbing that off your rear wheel and bodywork next time you wash the bike rather than gently wiping off some scottoil.

So - wait for the chain to dry and give it a light manual coating of scottoil (or gear oil, which I too use in the scottoiler itself) and you're done. Alternatively, if you're about to ride the bike somewhere after washing it, just let the scottie do it's job and re-lube the chain automatically!

That's exactly what I meant, thanks a million. I bought a bottle of scottoil so I think I will just refill the scottoiler and take the bike for a long spin when it's clean. Thanks again,

    Hi Don,

If you are not keen to buy Scottoil we would say that a light gear oil
(e.g.EP80) would be a reasonable alternative.

EP 80/90 is very good lubricant but I have tried it in Scot oilers and found its to thick and the little vaccuum pump is not strong enough especialy in winter. I just top up with engine oil and it works well.

That's great, it's good to know you can use alternatives if necessary / preferred. I managed to find a bottle of scottoil locally so I'm gonna use that but I may try the others in the future
