Re: RD04 Rattle - the video !!
The follow-up...
I wasn't sure whether to start a new thread or not but I'm now the 14th owner of the rattly RD04!
The bike is now spread out around my garage. Something I noticed as soon as I started taking it apart was a loose front top engine mounting. Chris was worried that I'd find out it was a 20p fault causing the rattle. I tightened it up and crossed my fingers...
guess what...
...breathe easy Chris, it still rattles.
Checking the cam chain wear indicators shows the chains are still within limits at about 4.5mm of the tensioner wedge showing (limit is 6mm). Although they are within limits this doesn't mean the tensioner is working properly so it's probably time to do the lot.
The noise seems to come mostly from the front of the front head. The question is whether this is a trick of the acoustics and the noise is really from a malfunctioning tensioner or whether it is valve or small end related instead.
Now, I could just do what the dealer was going to do and fit new chains and tensioners (leaving the old guides in place) and hope for the best. However, I don't like doing half a job so it's motor out time and I'll check out the small ends, heads and valves before spending money.
While stripping it, I've come up with a few bits I will need so if anyone has any of these bits then I'd be interested:
- Regulator Rectifier (off RD04 or RD07 - there are no loom connectors so it doesn't matter which).
- Front downpipe with collector (old collector is a bit knackered). Anyone know if RD07 or RD07a front pipes are a 100% match?
- Rear mudguard plastics - there are various bits that have been made to fit. Anyone got a photo of an RD04 showing what it should look like looking up under the rear wheel?
- Front fork top caps
- Left hand radiator
- Oil cooler bottom mounting plate
- Screw-in inspection cover over alternator bolt on lhs casing
The saga will continue once I've got the motor stripped.
