Nah, but Im still going for a week long trip along the norwegian/swedish border. Lots of gravel roads
But on my way I´m having it serviced at a skilled workshop. Got an appointment on monday. Get back to you when I´m home in 1 1/2 week.
They´re gonna sync the carbs, adj vents and replace the choke cable. Hope that improves the bike. Either way I guess they can tell me why it runs so "hard", if service doesn´t do it. Also got som TKC80s to fit before i hit the dirt.
PS: Just hope I got the fuelpump by then.. or I have to learn the "gravity" trick..

Before you think about selling it or breaking it.... spend a little cash, have a decent mechanic check the tappets and chain.... you said it yourself you're not totally handy with the spanners, getting the tappet setting 100% correct is a skill.

    Good luck

Right - got back from my trip on friday night.

Opened up the garage on saturday morning and there she was.

Got my kit on and went for a ride.

Tried to ignore the rattle but after about 40mins it was annoying me so much I turned around and went home.

At the moment I dont have the cash to throw at investigations or at jobs which may not cure it so it is probably time for action.

Break or sell as is !!!??

will accept offers for whole bike as detailed below:

    just over 30K miles

    10 months MOt

    10months tax

    recent chain and sprockets

    New dakar renthals

    New centre stand

    Touratech hand guards

    etc etc

    Includes free unidentified rattle !!!

I know its hassle but I think I may get more breaking ?

    your views please ?

    The follow-up...

I wasn't sure whether to start a new thread or not but I'm now the 14th owner of the rattly RD04!

The bike is now spread out around my garage. Something I noticed as soon as I started taking it apart was a loose front top engine mounting. Chris was worried that I'd find out it was a 20p fault causing the rattle. I tightened it up and crossed my fingers...

    guess what...

...breathe easy Chris, it still rattles.

Checking the cam chain wear indicators shows the chains are still within limits at about 4.5mm of the tensioner wedge showing (limit is 6mm). Although they are within limits this doesn't mean the tensioner is working properly so it's probably time to do the lot.

The noise seems to come mostly from the front of the front head. The question is whether this is a trick of the acoustics and the noise is really from a malfunctioning tensioner or whether it is valve or small end related instead.

Now, I could just do what the dealer was going to do and fit new chains and tensioners (leaving the old guides in place) and hope for the best. However, I don't like doing half a job so it's motor out time and I'll check out the small ends, heads and valves before spending money.

While stripping it, I've come up with a few bits I will need so if anyone has any of these bits then I'd be interested:
    • Regulator Rectifier (off RD04 or RD07 - there are no loom connectors so it doesn't matter which).
    • Front downpipe with collector (old collector is a bit knackered). Anyone know if RD07 or RD07a front pipes are a 100% match?
    • Rear mudguard plastics - there are various bits that have been made to fit. Anyone got a photo of an RD04 showing what it should look like looking up under the rear wheel?
    • Front fork top caps
    • Left hand radiator
    • Oil cooler bottom mounting plate
    • Screw-in inspection cover over alternator bolt on lhs casing
The saga will continue once I've got the motor stripped.
