    RD04 sprocket sizes

OK people, I know a few of you have experimented with different sprockets, so I have a specific question.

Please, I don't want a flood of answers, telling me a trillion combinations because that will just confuse me, so please just an answer to the following.

On my RD04, I want to use a standard length chain, and the standard 16 tooth front sprocket. I'd like to knock a few teeth off the rear for better cruising speeds and fuel economy, but don't want to affect acceleration too much.

What rear sprocket should I go for?

I've searched through the forum, but it all just gets too confusing, with some answers.

    Thanking you for your specific'ness

    Hello,

Based on my own recent experience:
16 in front and 43 in rear is what you can manage with a new chain at original length. I would suggest a slight reduction of the chain lenght in order to have a chance to adjust for future chain wear.
My old restricted (50 hp) ex-German machine is able to follow the traffic with that set-up, even with luggage in wide cases.

Hope you find this info usefull.

    Re: RD04 sprocket sizes

    Hello Matt

Your question is well timed indeed.

I've tried ordering a rear 43 tooth sprocket from UK specialists, B&C Express, only to be told they don't have it, or it's not available.

Anyway, I have ordered a 44, so as soon as it arrives, I will fit it to see the difference.

I'll be running a OE Honda 16 tooth front, Gold Xring DID chain, 44 tooth Renthal Hard Anodised alloy rear sprocket (I know before you all say it, but I wanted to try one!!) and I will be fitting a Scottoiler at the same time.

    Bob,
I have a 17 front and 43 rear combo sitting here waiting to fit. So if you fancy an experimental ride before and after, you can help me fit them.

Hi Bob, its a little crazy, the PO told me he fitted a -1 tooth rear for highway use, so I checked this evening and it is 43.. Africa Queens sell a standard rear at 525/16/45 OK 45 and then Wemoto sell a -2 tooth and in the notes says its a 44 !!! so any idea what is standard ?

As mentioned I run a 16/43 at around 120/130 kph I'm at 5 k maybe 5.250 and its at this point the engine just changes note and it a little more rought... hense why I'm keen to stick with what I have or better it... speed isnt important just comfortable cruising... Please let me know how you get on...

    Cheers Matt
