Using chain wax for lubing cables?

    Morning everyone,

Was wondering if any of you ever tried to use chain wax for lubricating cables, clutch & brake levers etc?

Apparently it does not attrack sand/dirt and I was hoping you can advise before I stuff up a cable...?

Cheers...great site! Would be great to meet any of you...here in Cape Town?

Dont do it it will collect and become grimey and eventually cause the cables to bind up leading to an unfourtunate situation that you may or may not be able to recover from.

Dont ask me how I know this!

Jicki' is right, DON'T ASK ME HOW I KNOW THIS EITHER!!

The particular brand that I used had such fantastic "anti-fling" properties that it practically GLUED a clutch cable, which you may say isn't a big deal UNTIL I tell you that I replaced all the clutch plates and fitted heavy duty clutch springs (even though those I took out looked suspiciously good!!) BEFORE I noticed that it was slipping because the cable was getting STUCK!!

Now, if I have to use anything, I would suggest WHITE GREASE with PTFE. I dunno whether that's the right thing to do or not!

Thanks guys, I think I get the hint... What about using dry lube for the levers (not the cables), which Würth sells, some kind of wax stick which we used for the door hinges at Landrover - any good? Am just sick of this grinding paste which normal grease forms.

Also am still not sure if the OEM clutch etc. cables are teflon/nylon (which now?) coated or not, which lubricant to use in the end (gear oil, WD40, butter, margarine,..)? I looked through the various posts in order not to start another one...but am still not sure (maybe olive oil?)...please please...

You can get spray cable lube (very light) from some bike dealers/MX shops or online (Ipone spray cable lube). Taking apart your levers regularly and lightly greasing (I use LM) them keeps everything nice and smooth. If your clutch cable is graunchy just get a new one. It will feel like a new bike!

Another reason why I avoid bike shops - they replaced my clutch on the TDM only to find out afterwards that the clutch was slipping because of a frayed cable.

WD40 does it for me. It may be wrong but it's all I've ever used without any problems.
Cape Town sounds very tempting, more so when the winter sets in here.

Don't know if it's right or wrong, but everytime I change oil, I use a little of the left over new engine oil and funnel it down between each cable and the outer casing. Never had a problem so far.
