    Spacecops Blog 10/7/08

    Hello again,

I have started my AT rebuild and I thought I'd do a lil blog of it. So here goes.

My AT, the same colours as the AT in the top left of your screen, has done about 9000 miles. I havent really looked after it and when it needed tyre, chain and a service all at the same time I was too poor to get it done and I put it under cover and waited until I got the urge to ride it and had enough cash.

So, when I finally have unearthed it, there is some work to do.

So far, I have checked it over and its all there bar a bar end wieght.

I have taken off the plastic, binned the battery, taken the calipers off and binned the chain.

Off came the tank and fuel pump. Off came the front subframe, mirrors and indicators.

Upon examination the frame has some rusty areas, but nothing scary. The engine covers have some paint flakage and the subframe has some rust, also not scary.
The radiators, whilst still full of lovely green antifreeze mixture have gone flaky on the outside, it looks galvanic but i find that hard to comprehend so i'll have a closer look when im not prepping bits for reassembly.

The airfilter had been nibbled by rodents and I tipped a nest out of the airbox.

The wheels look ok, the spokes have crud on them so once i get them clean ill getter a better idea of their state.

The plastic is in good nick, with a couple of scratches where me an the bike fell over at a junction when me foot didnt reach the ground soon enough.

So, what have I done so far?

Washed the plastics, Tank and anything else I took off. Trimmed the Fuel feed down to reduce the reserve amount somewhat.
Over hauled the fuel pump contacts and cleaned the pump.
    Rebuilt the Rear Caliper.
Fitted some HID bulbs to the Headlamps. ( some modification required ).
Removed the creatures from inside the Instrument housing and replaced the bulbs in it with LED ones.
Put 2 40mm holes in the sides of the airbox to free up the airflow a little.
Chopped up the rusty exhaust can in case I could renovate it in some way, but decided the effort was much too much, will get a stainless can to replace it.
Have been going at the front calipers for a day now and the Pad pins are stuck fast. Also one of the calipers has some damage which will need repair.

    Things to do,

Renovate, Repair or replace the 2 front calipers.

Derust and repaint the front subframe.

    Derust and repaint the frame.

    Clean the Sumpguard.

That'll do for the time being, I have replacement parts ready to fit for the brake line, chain and sprockets and tyres.

Need to source stainless bolts for all the bits

I will ofcourse add pics, my bike lives at a mates so it will be over the weekend I'll add pics of the sorry state the bike is in.

Things like the pump rebuild I couldnt take meaningful pics of, since i have only a phone camera.

Oh and if anyone has ideas, advice or anything else relevant ( or otherwise) to add then feel free, I would welcome them.

Yeah, mate an @ with so many miles on the clock? Not worth bothering with. I'd give up now and if I were you. I'll be round on Sunday to take it off your hands. I know, I know I am doing you a favour but what are mates for hey?

    Hi all,

Front calipers rebuilt/replaced, one had chunks missing from around the piston dust seal.

Got a caliper from a Transalp and rebuilt that with me other one.

Nice shiny Stainless Motad Venom arrived a couple of days ago so its off to the tip with the old silencer bits.

I will upload a couple of caliper pics on Monday. In the next few days ill be visiting the bike, will take pics and sort out next jobs.
