Preparing my AT form Germany for NZ

    Hello UK,

I get to you with a question from Germany:
We are about to move to NZ and want to take our AT with us. According to this I'm wondering what it takes to suit my head-light for left-side traffic. You know that we drive on the right side of the road here, so does the light shines in a different direction than yours.
Do I have to change the complete light unit, or maybe just the mirror inside?
Anyway, can anybody offer me what I need or give me proper information where to ask or get whatever I need?

    Thx + regards
    Juergen

I may be wrong, but i think my UK headlamps do not appear to be sided.

May I suggest you have a look at your headlight beam pattern and see if it has a bias one way or the other.

All LHD cars owned by the military have to have continental headlights fitted
I've never heard of a bike having to refit headlights,
I might be wrong but I think the only difference is your speedo in Km that may have to have a sticker or renewed to read Miles per hour,
or is NZ all metrickery now

The other thing is that the bike will need to be surgically clean. The Kiwis are, rightly, paranoid about invasive species of both plants and insects (I guess a stow away badger would be obvious). And this goes for the packing crate too. I assume that you are shipping it over??

As for the bike - make sure that the head light dips to the left and that the speedo shows KPH markings.

Should be someone along in a minute that actually knows what they are talking about..........

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Re: Preparing my AT form Germany for NZ

I imported my @ from Scotland to New Zealand about two years ago. And what an awesome bike for NZ roads it is. Mine was a UK model and the speedo is in both Mph and KPh. So no problems there, even though the "Ks" a re in a small sized font. I don't even know that the headlight was checked. But I will ask my local dealer tomorrow who helped me bring the bike in and get it through the Ministry of Agri and Fish checks etc and then register it in NZ. Will post a reply in the next day or so. Cheers

FYI, it cost me NZD,$2,500 or about UK700 to get it here and landed including VAT/GST. By the time I paid, freight, devanning from container, forestry inspection, bio-security fee, terminal security fee, customs clearance, and shipping insurance. And as mentioned earlier the bike needs to be surgically clean, including the spaces between the tyre tread.

Was it worth it. Hell yes. Just make sure you have heated grips fitted. It's winter here right now!

As per the "Haynes Bible", horizontal and vertical adjustments of each headlight can be made. (Chapter 1 page 23 verse eight). All 750 models appear to be the same.
Vert Adj of right headlight made by turning wingnut bottom left corner, clockwise down, anticlock up. Horiz Adj by turning adjuster screw, top right hand corner of unit, clockwise right, anti clock left.
VA of left headlight made by turning wingnut bottom right corner, clockwise up, anticlock down. HA by turning adjuster screw, top left hand corner of unit, clockwise left, anti clock right.
    Easy-Peasy eh?
Best of luck with it, I'm confused even reading the bl**dy thing!

Re: Preparing my AT form Germany for NZ

My @ started life in Italy, so in KMs, then shipped into UK, where I got it and shipped it to NZ. (NZ went metric in the 70's)
Had no issues with anything including the lights, when going through whats called the Pre Registration Check here in NZ, ( like a giant MOT, where they check all the bikes specs against NZ rules and regs), and its there its gets its VIN plate for NZ.

My experience was very easy, rode the bike to a shipping company in London and they crated it, didnt even disconnect the battery or drain petrol, they just wanted fuel to be very low. 7 weeks later in NZ I collected it from Auckland, started it after about 2 mins worth of cranking and rode it 350 kms home. Had it VIN-ed 2 days later.

I did put a lot of thought into the move and did all my homework, got heaps of quotes from different companies. Read up up as to what I should do about battery disconnection or removal.. Thought about stripping down the plastics and front wheel off, wing mirrors etc... Looked into crating it myself, finding the right wood, treated to NZ standards, which was nearly impossible. Then found a source but the wood was silly expensive... All in all I did nothing to the bike, just cleaned it and rode to the Shippers.

So I found it super easy. Find a company that does it all for you at the lowest cost and go with that. The quote I had from the company I used was the lowest and they did all the work. The cost for everything was just under £!000. Thats all shipping and on road costs. @'s will get into NZ no probs, depending on the year. Thats easy to find out on NZ customs website.

All the best with the move. Dont think for a moment about leaving your @ behind. Cheers

larry is right, its for sure the best bike for riding round this country,I,m in christchurch and bought my africa from a dutch man in hamilton,I have spent a lot of money getting spares from europe for all the bits that were wrong or broken but now it is running sweet, make sure you change any dodgy components before you get here as you will save a fortune in shipping.....ie fuel pump,I now have a facet pump fitted,...reg/rec.... brake calipers...and I got a set of forks from Italy!!! and lots of plastic fairings......good luck when you get here as it is an astounding country to tour....

Yeah right on Kennymact. Its amazing here, you can get to great on and off roads nearly anywhere. Its so much fun and plenty of winding roads, Ive done 10k kms or more and I dont get out all that much. Hey if you're gonna bring parts, someone sell/get me RD04 engine bars!!! I'll do anything for them, honest , I got money, but also a wife, so a budget (shipping to NZ too much for our relationship at the mo). You got or heard of any stray engine bars Kennymact? Cheers
