Finally - back on the road

    'lo all.

Not terribly fascinating, but I thought I ought to mention that after fun with these:

and then buying some of these:

and then all the trouble with this:

(...oh, and the bike getting blown over in the wind, repairing the plastic, spraying the handguards, getting the crash bar re-welded...)

I am now finally back on the road:

    Huzzah and Hurrah, etc!

So I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all your help and support and suggestions - I can honestly say I don't think my @ would be back on the road yet without you lot.

    Cheers

    Nice work.

Those are seriously shiny rims, are they stainless??

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

No, polished aluminium. Which means (unlike anodised) I can just get the autosol out and polish them again to keep them nice.

Well, that's the plan, anyway - will have to wait and see.

I think we may be after an XRV job lot discounted price scenario.

Re: Finally - back on the road

Right, here I am - sorry for the delay, stopped for some lunch.

I haven't got my bike notebook here with me at the moment, so I can't be 100 percent accurate on the prices I'm afraid, but the wheels were new rims and spokes built onto the original hubs by Steve at Wheelwise, who is in Cowfold in Sussex ( http://tinyurl.com/6lsl9n )

Tel No. 01403 864 533 - I don't think he has a website, but he is a very nice bloke and I'm sure you won't mind if you give him a ring.

He did really excellent work, and cleaned the hubs up for me too at the same time. It did take a few weeks, but he warned me about that in advance as he was just very busy. Plus he had some grief with his suppliers - again, not his fault:

As you might know, the RD04 is originally a 2.75 inch rear rim - turns out it was impossible to get that with the right number of spoke holes, so I had a choice of a 3.50 or a 2.50 width rear.

Since the original 130 tyre can be fitted to a 2.50 I went with that. Well, it was cheaper, for a start, and although I could have gone with a 3.50 rear width and tried to put a wider rear tyre on it, I didn't really see the point in the end.

With regards to prices, I also had him fit brand new tyres, rim tape - the whole hog - but I think just for the wheels it was around £190 for the rear and 165 for the front - so 355 (ish) for the pair.

(Since I was being quoted 300 to 330 odd for having the old rims blasted and powder coated and rebuilt, I went with new. )

Again, I could be a little out, so best to give him a call and get an accurate quote for yourself - particularly if you do want a 3.50 rear, as that would be a bit more.

I did actually mentioned the forum here to him so if you do ring you can always say a bloke called Dan on the internet says you build really good wheels

I hope that all makes sense and is of some use. Finally, there are a couple more pictures here http://web.rodentia.org.uk/wheels for any wheel fetishists out there

Re: Finally - back on the road

OK, who'd be interested in this?
I guess we'd need a spare set of wheels doing the rounds while each of our sets was at the menders.
Anyone know what difference getting the wide wheel would make?

I can try the bloke and see if there is any scope for an XRV job lot discount.
