200 miles on a tank here too. I have seen 100mph, but I wouldnt be confident at it. Our roads here are ****e, as are other road users, and the @ isnt designed to cut through wind like others. I usually find the wind catches the hand guards, and starts to encourage a form of tankslapper, unless you hang on tight. 85-90 is still comfortable though.

I get about 43mpg out of mine, use to get 48-51 (hardly varied) out of my 650 transalp. Have occasionally taken mine to an indicated 100mph (which is probably less due to speedo over-read) and it doesn't fill me with confidence..bike is much happier sitting at 80 ish where it is still stable.
Wouldn't recommend buying one if you regularly want to do that sort of speed..maybe something like a triumph tiger or a varadero might be better.

I get 110mph out of my rd-07 with normal road/touring tyres... i get the feeling i could squeeze another 5 out of it, but its getting a bit of a handfull by the time you get to that speed... like someone else said, its not exactly the most aerodynamic of shapes lol.
I get about 190 miles out of a full tank, but im 6ft 2 and 19st, so not the easiest of lumps to cart about. i do tend to give the bike some where condition/roads allow, so i reckon 200 and a bit wouldnt be out of the question if i toned things down a bit

I cannot believe this. I wonder if you can . This seems too unreal to me.
After lots of researches I found that the RD07 is more economical than the RD04. 85 MPG even 73 is a fairy tale. 85 MPG is 3.32 liters/100km. If this is real, you should take your bike back to Japan to the factory so the engineers can study it a lil bit to reduce the consumption of these steel horses in the future. Please do that for us!

The best I have ever seen on my `92 RD04 was 47,5 MPG but I have also experienced 39.3. What do you guys reckon, is this normal or high for an AT of this age?
I would be curious those who own RD04 what consumption you ve got.

I used to get about 50mpg on my RD04, this was after i fitted a K&N filter which improved it consumption wise. On my current RD07 I'm getting 56/58mpg at the moment which is the highest I've managed in normal riding. I think it's the not having to wear waterproofs all the time that's helping here, as it's normally low 50s.

I'm on standard gearing, unwashed bike, high mileage, K&N filter, well oiled chain and tyres always at the right pressure, 80mph motorway riding mostly with just a hint of east London filtering.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Dare I say this on the @ section
If high speed touring is what you're going to be doing a Varadero would be a better bet. It will sit at a ton on the autostrada, 2 up and fully loaded, without feeling that you're on the edge. (Still get the lunatic italian tailgaters even at that speed) Fuel consumption does suffer at those speeds, as it will with any vehicle. 160 m to a tankful. Drop back to 80 and you're looking at closer to 200m.

Re: Africa Twin general performance top speed and fuel consumption

Just filled my tank, 20L bang on (5.23gallons) the clock said that I had done 256kms (160miles in old money) since my last fill. That gives me an average of 30mpg. I would have clocked up the milage on combined driving urban and a few runs out into the country. I'm no Rossi when it comes to speed either. Is there anything I can do to improve fuel economy? My car runs more economical and some of the average mpg's posted here make me feel I should be sponsored by Shell

Watch the tyres. My TKCs are restricted to 99mph. The bike has done 110 on the Sat Nav (nearer 115pmh on the speedo).

Fuel consumption for the RD04 is lower on standard gearing. more like 45mpg.
