Africa Twin general performance top speed and fuel consumption

Thanks for replies about lowering a twin. Whats the top speed of the Africa -will it do over 100? What do they do to the gallon??

If youve ridden in europe you'll know you have to go over a ton to stay alive sometimes.

I'm riding a Trophy 900 at present with a Transalp 600v as a runabout but fancy something with a better riding position. Looked at loads but usually too big for me. The Africa looks like it could be a goer so comments appreciated.

    Cheers

    BT

My 1998 will do over 100 no problems on standard gearing - I have dropped 5 teeth on the back sprocket to bring the cruising rpm down and it will still do that most of the time.

I expect a happy compromise of say 42/43 teeth on the back would bring the revs down and let it sit at 100 all day long.

Haven't done that sort of speeds for long enough to calculate the MPG...didn't run out of fuel though!

    Hi mate.

you can get 200m to a tank (22lt) taking it easy. never had mine too 100

but sat at 90 im lucky to get 160m aspecialy up and down on the A66.

Dont know the mpg is as iv never worked it out, but im sure somone will be along to let you know.

As for riding position im 6ft 4 and find it great, and spending a lot of time in your neck of the woods its greate as i can see over the hedges and 10mph cars.

Had it over a year now and plan to keep it for atleast another one.

In an endurance test (65mph?) in Spain last year my mate Dan got 264 out of a tank on the autoroute (mine was still going. just).

One of the best things about a good AT is how little the fuel consumption varies - motorway at 80 will still give you over 200miles to a tank.

Yeah, they'll pull to past 100 without complaint but if your tyres aren't tip top and spot on inflated, or head bearing is at all tight or loose, they are a bit of a handful at that speed
I think around 110 or so is top whack but a big traillie at that speed? Fugedaboudit

On mpg: keeping revs below 6,000 will give you very consistent mpg and easily deliver 200 or maybe 210 or 15 before reserve. If you go easy on the acceleration away from junctions and the like, you can do even better - have a word with Paul S, he's a master at it.

Once you go over 6,000 rpm (so about 80 - 83 on the motorway), mpg heads down really fast and you might find yourself going on to reserve at 160 or 70. 135 was my worst to reserve but I won't go into how that happened

And choke trouble will also knock your mpg for six.
RD07a, reg in 2001, Black, heated grips, short screen, Scottoiler, Givi top box and panniers, DataTag, full Riky Cross crash bars, Baglux tank cover, Facet pump, mostly 200 miles to reserve and presently a lot happier since being loved up at Chad's hospital for sick ATs!

I normaly get 200 miles before reserve . Thats riding normal, no slow starts & riding with Airwolf

Only managed to get 170 before hitting reserve in France in June, but that was riding at 90 - 100 mph fully loaded

Went back into Europe in July the bike averaged 58 miles to the gallon on all sorts of roads from mountain passes to motorway.

Re: Africa Twin general performance top speed and fuel consumption

I'd like to see the difference in MPG between two AT engines - one run in properly (Upping the revs progressively and not being too gentle or harsh) by someone with good mechanical sympathy and one that never even gets past 5000rpm...

    Hi guys
I ride a RD04 but i mostlly do cruising,so i was thinking to put back sproket with less teeth (4-5) just to drop down the RPM-s
Do you think it is a good idea and how it going to reflect on the top speed and the fuel consumption
    Thank you

This is a common modification, taking 3 or 4 teeth down on rear will reduce revs for a given speed, hitting top speed may not be so easy but top speed is not so important as comfortable cruising.
I doubt consumption will be much different

    Well
For me will be ok if i hit 160km/h (anyway i dont do more)
but with less rpm-s and low fuel consumption
