    losing laquer

My bike sits out in the sun day after day and when I washed the bike this weekend i saw that water had got between the laquer and the paint and some of the laquer has come away from around the petrol cap area.

would I need to remove decals, sand down, and respray laquer or can I just spray the laquer over the affected areas.

I ask as I know very little about laquer and am not sure if it is like paint and need undercoats etc etc..

or should I just look for a bagster(went on their site and they only do green for my year, so a second hand one)

    cheers

It's always a good idea to do a good job of any repair first time round. If you just sprayed over the affected area it would probably not adhere correctly as it has no "key" to bond to and it would be noticable and it would probably lift and flake in time. It could also be the fact that there is petrol splashing over the area and that lifting the laquer off. If I was in your shoes, I would be looking to have a professional spray booth or two look at the tank and quote accordinly. The other option as you mentioned is get a tank bag, wap it on and viola you can't see, but it will always be there and it will, I promise play on your mind knowing the fact it is not done properly.
    Those are my thoughts
    Regards

If you just touch up with laquer without sanding it may delay the laquer peeling a bit but nothing more, If you sand it down your are likely to mark the basecoat below and when re-laquered will look awful.
The only real way to do it is to sand down the are and feather out the edges of the peeling laquer (this could prove quite difficult as the laquer may just keep peeling the more you sand down) I would recomend using 1200 grit wet and dry paper (very wet with a bit of washing up liquid in the water, this will help keep the paper clear of clogging and then leaving deep scratches.
Once the laquer has feathered out, I would then dust a bit of primer over the affected area (I say dust, this will reduce the amount of solvent hitting the area and reduce the chances of it "picking up" around the edges of the laquer, once primed a light wet flat with 1200 grit paper. Now your ready to blow in the base coat colour and the re-laquer.
This may sound like an overkill but its the only way I know to do it properly, other than completely stripping and re-painting the whole panel.
Now I've been away from vehicle painting full time for about 15 years and in that time the new generation of waterbased paints have materialised so someone may come along with knowledge of the newer technologies and offer you a simpler solution.......Russ
