    A lack of lighting

I had the front of my RD-07 apart yesterday, screen / fairing off, clocks to one side etc, changed the headlight bulbs while i was in there.

Once reassembled, the headlights are great, but some lighting for the clocks etc are not on.

I have a lit temp gauge, lit rev counter, and the right hand side of my speedo is lit, but the left hand side of the speedo has no lighting, and my trip screen is working, but is not back lit.

Obviously my first thought is to take the dash off again and give everything a wiggle, but just checking first whether there is a common fault that is associated with this problem?

Quite common. When I touch anything electrical it breaks too.

Hi Eeyoresnose you can get the Bulbs from Halfords,The Trip meter light Bulb is Part No 284 . 12v-2.3w.The speedo lights i replaced with x4 Laser blue Part No 501lb. 12v-5w"or normal bulbs"slightly cheeper but the Laser blue make all the difference ,Might as well change the four Bulbs for the speedo at the same time.Francis

is it likely to be that the bulbs have died? they were fine before i started mauling with it, seems strange that they would die together.
Thanks for the tips on what bulbs they are tho, will be worth picking up some up for spares.

They could have been on their last legs and when you moved the clocks they have given up.The left hand side bulb could have been a dud and you are only seeing it now due to lack of light at night time.I only changed mine after i had been going home after a run and it was getting dark at the time ,And i thought it was just not as bright on that side if i remember right the Bulb is partly hidden by other wires and does not stand out as much as the others. In fact i had my @ about six months before i noticed the Trip meter was not lighting up ,Again i was comming home when it was getting dark and could not see the Digits but could see them the following morning,Then the penny dropped about the bulb.Francis

    Re: A lack of lighting

    well...

the bulbs didnt work all day yesterday. put the bike away as normal, came to start her up this morning... and the bulbs work again

i think im going to pick up a set of spares anyway (probably the bulbs you recommended), my journey in the morning is mostly in the dark, and not having the trip would be a pain, dont need the speedo tho

PS. if anyone wants to use my garage's restorative powers to fix any bike problems, im sure we can arrange a nightly rate !

Hi Eeyoresnore it could be a loose or almost broken earth wire , somewhere around the back of the light cluster.Francis

As an alternative to replacing the standard filament bulbs for your dashlights - why not replace them with LEDs and never need to change them them again - you can choose whichever colour you like as well.

I went for red which matches the tripmeter - and gives a really nice look to the dash at night.

The LED bulbs are the type 501 W5W (wide angle) - plenty to be found on ebay in red, blue, amber, yellow, green, or plain white

Sympathise with you, but can't offer any help however. Had my "wigwam" relay fitted to the AT's headlights a couple of days ago, having taken off the nose and side panels, it's a nightmare underneath!
Took my mechanic and I about 3 hours to hook it up! The sigh of relief after the last retaining screw on the nose cone was tightened could be heard miles away!
    Good luck you'll need it!

    Re: A lack of lighting

Stormforce - do the LEDs take any special fittings or will they pop straight into the current setup?

Yeh the front end isnt the best layout ive ever seen, on my 125 vara i didnt even need to do anything to change the bulbs, just reach behind the bars, cap off, bulb changed, cap on jobs a goood'un
